The most important thing this squirrel needs to do today is feed itself, so I stayed far away to avoid scaring it. There were other bugs today, but this was the best bug. Who doesn`t like a mouthful of bacon on a Sunday morning? Bird One. Bird Two.

Art is everywhere. This is as close as I got before they got nervous. Get outside. Go to a park. Look at your phone. Sometimes it`s hard to find the right angle while avoiding oncoming cars and inquisitive people on the sidewalk. The person who nearly ran me over today. There will be another tomorrow.

October 3, 2023
It was too good to last (see September 26, 2023). Someone else is always having a worse day than me (see March 19, 2023; October 5, 2022; October 20, 2020; November 7, 2019; January 22, 2018; December 13, 2016; December 5, 2011; November 28, 2011; and February 7, 2005). I`m distracted by shiny objects. All signs indicate it`s going to be a nice autumn evening. Shadows warn I won`t be able to walk to work for long.

October 4, 2023
A dinosaur appeared on my front porch this morning (see October 11, 2022). What are you doing at noon? Taking cleanliness to new heights. Break time for the parking garage attendant. I don`t understand why strangers ask me to take their photo (see July 24, 2023).

October 5, 2023
I like going to events where there is good food. I also like events where there is good music. The ideal combination is good food that looks like music. After many years of wear and tear, I had to buy a new pair of black Chucks. The design has changed slightly. The price has changed significantly.

Fluid Dynamics by Jon Barlow Hudson. The design was aesthetic, but structurally unsound (see October 4 above). From the looks of it, this bee may never move again. But this monarch has a thousand mile migration ahead. I take pictures of the important moments in my life.

October 7, 2023
This roller derby team is sponsored by a university physics department. Every bout is a lesson in physics. The coach and loudest cheerleader. `Here, let me show you the exit.` They knock each other down, but everyone`s friendly. On the way home from roller derby, I encountered a ginger vampiress.

October 8, 2023
Dogs just want to have fun. Try to get a cat to do this. Higher than the trees. Meanwhile, people were casually walking beneath the slack line. A skilled cyclist meets a fearless volunteer.

October 9, 2023
You`re not. Really -- seriously -- you`re NOT going to. I guess you are (see February 6, 2022). `Why do humans pollute my sky?` I feel trapped by autumn. My furnace is running already. This is the window of a restaurant that opened recently in the Oregon District. Welcome to the neighborhood.

October 10, 2023
I needed to take a photo of myself at my desk. With the Canon app, I was able to control the camera. It was so cold this morning, I had to drive to work. I`m glad I don`t have to use the parking garage often. They`re pretty up there, but then they fall on my car.

October 11, 2023
Natural and unnatural side by side. Fish beware. I walked a long way to take a photo of Michael Jordan. Great Miami River things. Fish beware.

October 12, 2023
There was a dance performance, but I took no photos. I was too busy to take pictures during the day. Oregon District fashions. Ready for the big Halloween party in a couple of weeks. Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment? WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Fall is here, whether I want it or not. Evening in West Chester. In a moment of divine guidance clearly showing me what I should do, a sunbeam illuminated a Dunkin` Donuts. At GiveCamp, a team of programmers volunteered to work on Discover Classical`s Web site all weekend. They had other things to do, but they offered their time.

October 14, 2023
After I went to bed at 12:45am, GiveCamp programmers continued working on Discover Classical`s Web site. I offered them public radio swag in gratitude. The programmers keep in touch online day and night. Last time I had a ticket for this event, it was canceled (see March 11, 2020). I hear there was an eclipse, but I was inside all day.

October 15, 2023
It`s the final day of Southwest Ohio GiveCamp. The programmers are still hard at work on Discover Classical`s Web site. Did I mention they`re volunteers? Typical street scene in the Oregon District. There`s a photographer in there someplace. I suspect this bee has made its last bumble.

Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28 by Camille Saint-Saens. Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72b by Ludwig van Beethoven. Set your radio to 88.1FM and just leave it there forever. The dark side of a radio studio. If I carefully choose 365 friends, I`ll eat cake every day.

October 17, 2023
There were people talking all around me. Here`s a bug. The sun was going down, as it often does. I stood at the highest point in Dayton. I paid my respects to Dayton`s troubled genius. The moon rose, as it often does.

The actor Richard Thomas, known as John-Boy Walton in the 1970s, got to meet me today. An exhibition of posters inspired by the writings of Paul Laurence Dunbar is being installed at the Main Library. Graphic design students from the University of Dayton created the posters and then hung them in the gallery. Students illustrated letters that Dunbar wrote to friends, family and colleagues during his career. Now that the weather is cold, there seems to be a one-eyed person living in the stairwell of my parking garage.

October 19, 2023
The installation of the Dunbar poster exhibition continues (see October 18 above). While designing the posters, students researched Dunbar`s life to understand the context of his letters. The show opens on October 23 at the Main Library. Meanwhile, an exhibition of work by Shon Walters is at The Contemporary Dayton. This piece is called The piercing of my three selves. I wonder if trees ever get on each other`s nerves by Shon Walters.

Friday Night Lights. Cold and rainy: I`m wearing a winter coat in October. Get there 75 minutes early and park next to the officials. Tonight is a teenage rite of passage. Time to celebrate the seniors. (Notice the absence of any actual football photographs.)

October 21, 2023
The Dia de los Muertos parade passes by my street. It`s an occasion for the living to honor the dead. He did not release the balloons (see October 9 above). It rained on the parade, but the group marched on. On the way back from the parade, I met the Grinch. I don`t live in a normal neighborhood (see October 7 above and August 31, 2019).

October 22, 2023
Other photographers stood around NOT taking pictures, apparently waiting for a bald eagle. I`m not so picky. I took many photos of this mockingbird and had time to listen to its entire repertoire of songs. Oh what a privilege it was to hear a pair of Carolina Wrens perform a duet: he sings, she rasps in response. Sunflower seeds contain nutrients that can support your immune system and boost your energy levels. Today`s bird photographs were made possible thanks to very expensive camera equipment and lots of patience.

October 23, 2023
I can`t see the sun, but the moon can. This kid asked me to take a photo AND to print it right there on the sidewalk (see October 4 above). Dia de los muertos is approaching. Inside the library. Outside the library.

October 24, 2023
One person`s garbage is another person`s photograph. My ongoing fascination with water jugs (see June 26, 2023). `We can still be friends.` I was happy to see the ice skating rink removed in the spring (see March 9, 2023) and depressed to see it now. This person thinks they`re having fun.

October 25, 2023
Rising to the top. Changing the direction. Pursuing the objective. Maintaining agility. Demonstrating strength.

October 26, 2023
Other people`s work hangs in art galleries. Mine goes on car bumpers. It was funny for the first month (see August 29, 2023). All of the playground equipment in the Oregon District has been removed, but the dinosaur survived extinction (see November 17, 2012). I don`t talk to my neighbors very much. Looks like this was the last day I can walk to work.

October 27, 2023
More than 20 years ago, a minor league baseball stadium was constructed in downtown Dayton. Crowds of people came to watch baseball and the direction of downtown Dayton was changed. In the off-season, the stadium gets upgrades. Last year, new lights were installed (see March 30, 2023). This year, the field is being totally rebuilt.

October 28, 2023
She was Chesire Cat this year (see October 29, 2022). Don`t fear The Reaper. It`s just a guy with a big head. Just another night in the Oregon District. Days later, this photo is still shocking. There`s only two types of people in the world: the ones that entertain and the ones that observe. BRITNEY SPEARS

October 29, 2023
My neighbor saw leaves emerge in spring, but didn`t live to see them fall in autumn. What will become of the cat? Taking the pictures is just the beginning. A lot of work needs to be done afterward to display the pictures here. Per aspera ad astra. Recipe for tonight`s dinner: wash, then eat. AA sat in row AA at the ballet today.

October 30, 2023
Undecided. In the same spot where I photographed early daffodils (see February 6, 2023), now I shoot late season roses. Beware roving bands of carnivorous squirrels. I wore a winter coat, but I should`ve brought gloves. Pray for a mild fall.

October 31, 2023
The parking garage stairwell seems to be someone`s place of residence (see October 18 above). It`s fruitless to analyze the behavior of other people. It`s snowing on Halloween. Kids run away after learning I don`t have candy for them. How I feel about November tomorrow.
