October 1, 2022
Homecoming night in the Oregon District (see April 29, 2022). Hanging around East Fifth Street. And the yellow paint on the curb means what? Hanging around East Fifth Street. Possibly another project to keep someone`s kid busy (see August 30, 2022).

October 2, 2022
Back after a three-year hiatus (see October 6, 2019). Sometimes he landed correctly, sometimes he didn`t. Surf dog! Super dog! I`ll just watch from down here, thanks.

October 3, 2022
Shiny sunset. Not sorry to see you go. Textures of downtown Dayton. Flashbacks to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That evening sun go down.

October 4, 2022
I`m a nature photographer in the city. Wait, I thought you left (see October 3 above). It`s been a long time since I wandered around aimlessly. The river is always so facetnating. Tuesday was a sun day.

Before I say thanks -- you DO support Discover Classical, right? It`s a bad idea to eat popcorn and then talk on the radio. He`s very good at STAY, but not SIT or HEEL. How do you like my posts? There`s always someone having a worse day than you.

October 6, 2022
I walked out the door this morning planning to drive to work, but then looked at the sky and changed my mind. Are you absolutely certain that`s the color you wanted? People who live in glass houses need a big squeegee. It`s always a party at Dayton Metro Library! Going round Hyde Park Corner on a moped (my daily `Hitchhiker`s Guide to the Galaxy` joke).

October 7, 2022
Big plans for this Web site. Will they actually happen? This one didn`t last long (see September 23, 2022). Don`t it always seem to go that you don`t know what you got `til it`s gone. They paved paradise put up a parking lot. JONI MITCHELL My neighbor`s sympathies have changed (see March 25, 2022). Friday night at the opera. I normally go on Sundays, but I want to photograph a soccer game this Sunday instead.

October 8, 2022
Back after a seven year hiatus (see October 3, 2015). Before. After. When it`s a long banquet with lots of speeches. A basketball player was inducted into the hall of fame. She was already pretty tall.

October 9, 2022
I`d rather be here than the opera (see October 7 above). Wright State fans gave verbal abuse to the visiting team, particularly the goalkeeper, who they taunted by name. Unstoppable. Battle of the ponytails. They were about to lose the game, but scored a goal with two minutes left. Ending in a tie is worth celebrating.

October 10, 2022
This big bug was quite aware of me and my camera. Four more gone. Good progress (see October 3 above). I`m going to try and not hate fall, like I did last year. On Indigenous Peoples Day, I encounter a hoop dancer. The long walk home.

October 11, 2022
How long before there`s orange splatter on my porch? Quirks of the Oregon District. Fall is falling everywhere. Normally I avoid streetlights, but this one seemed fitting. Someone asked what place I`d most like to visit and I said Venice. She thought I meant a beach in California.

October 12, 2022
Joyeux anniversaire! Party`s over. Back after a three year hiatus. Every room needs one. Such talent (see February 28, 2019, and July 9, 2021).

October 13, 2022
Making progress, but it`s still just a mockup (see October 7 above). Rising, always rising. Everyone knows it`s windy. I didn`t walk to work today. I took the autumnobile. I pay to park in a garage, but rarely park in a garage.

October 14, 2022
Nice, but I still prefer green. My camera got confused about what to focus on. I haven`t been driving much, so I spent little time in the prairie this summer. This morning I went to say goodbye. A true nature lover. I walked carefully to avoid stepping on a masterpiece.

October 15, 2022
At this level of football, volunteers had to be recruited to hold the orange sticks seen in the background. They both had a chance to catch the ball. Neither did. To avoid getting sacked, the quarterback threw the ball in my direction, but I was an ineligible receiver. Complete passes were pretty rare. I stayed for the halftime show, then went home . . . and something bad happened (see October 16 below).

October 16, 2022
I went outside to get in my car and it wasn`t there. Was my car stolen? Or dismantled into pieces? Pretty glass crystals sparkle in the morning sun. The thing about the last time is you don`t know that it`s the last time `til it is. TENILLE TOWNES I wonder if I can trade this in for a new car.

October 17, 2022
An artist`s impression of what happened to my car. Should I show you the part that has the driver`s name? My car was damaged on the front by a very bad driver, and on the back by an innocent tree. I went outside to check on the tree. It held no grudge. I`m carrying around keys to a car I`ll probably never drive again. Meanwhile, I`m feeling healthy and it`s a bright fall day. It`s time for me to walk to work!

October 18, 2022
Waiting, in vain, for the insurance company to call. Trying not to worry, I turned to the Goldberg Variations this morning -- and no, NOT Glenn Gould. Someday in the future, if I ever have a car again, I`ll try to park it on this quiet side street. In other bad news, an arsonist was busy last night. The smell of smoke was very powerful in my building. I got through the day with air freshener and a purifier.

October 19, 2022
Getting older is okay if there`s cake (see October 12 above). Not a bad day to walk home from work. I have a big heavy box in my closet full of publications that include my photos. This booklet has lots of them. Waiting for the bus, I press that button on my camera. In a society that`s afraid to acknowledge mortality, celebrating Halloween is a fun way to perpetuate denial.

October 20, 2022
Walking to the bus, I said `Good morning` to someone, then looked at my watch to make sure it was still morning. Now, hours later, my watch hasn`t moved. Another meeting of the Adam Alonzo Fan Club (see April 30, 2005; August 5, 2008; May 21, 2013; July 8, 2014; September 28, 2017; and January 2, 2021). First bass. What the percussionist saw. I`ll bet his watch works correctly.

October 21, 2022
With cameras now you don`t need to know how to do anything other than press the button. In the 60s, I won photography awards from the United States Congress. We`ve been out here since about 9:30 this morning and caught three game fish: a pike and a smallmouth, and this saugeye that we`re going to have for dinner. I don`t have any quotes from them, since I did most of the talking. Their relatives were taking cell phone photos, so I offered to take a few and send them the pictures. I`ve been anxious because of my car being wrecked, so it was nice to sit in the warm sun, listen to the river and have pleasant encounters with people I don`t know. I left the river park feeling better than I had been.

October 22, 2022
I finally got to see what`s left of my car. I`ll just pop the hub cap on and be on my way (see October 16 above). I may get along without a car as long as there are things to take pictures of within walking distance of my house. The Day of the Dead is a colorful and festive occasion. This free show was better than some that I`ve paid for. Transforming into a skeleton.

October 23, 2022
By raking leaves across the street, they become the neighbor`s problem. Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition that pays tribute to ancestors who have died. Dayton Metro Library is always the right place to be. Bathtime is an opportunity for reflection. Could this be from my porch (see October 11 above)?

October 24, 2022
Lacking a car, I walked to Canton. This squirrel stopped and looked at me for just a fraction of a second, but that`s all the time my camera needed. Perfection is fleeting. J. D. Vance`s book is apparently worth nothing. You are sweet, O love, dear love. You are soft as the nesting dove. Come to my heart and bring it rest as the bird flies home to its welcome nest. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR

Leaf in limbo (1 of 2). Welcome to the neighborhood. Don`t park on my street. I haven`t complained much this year about weekend street closures. I`ve just had to adapt my life to them. This time of year, the picturesque tree-lined streets of my historic neighborhood are filled with piles of leaves. Leaf in limbo (2 of 2).

October 26, 2022
With my car wrecked, I don`t get around much anymore. I came close to not taking any pictures at all today. But fortunately, I can always take dull photos indoors. It don`t mean a thing if it ain`t got that swing. Well okay, this one`s pretty good, actually.

October 27, 2022
People do strange things. But when a lot of people do the same thing, the strangeness becomes less apparent. People frequently try to leave a record of their existence, although that`s impossible on a pumpkin or a tombstone. The promise of living. The certainty of dying. Late October roses are a symbol of optimism.

October 28, 2022
I`ve been taking pictures of this guy for decades, but just today found out his name was Adam. Color, brightness and texture. I stood at the edge of the pond and watched the duck, thinking `Float into the blue and gold, please!` It obeyed. That mallard is apparently the companion of this duck that`s another species. But hey, love is love. I`m now the proud owner of a 2018 Ford Fiesta. I`ve been through the wringer lately, but normality is closer.

October 29, 2022
She finds a new way to be fabulous every year (see October 30, 2021). At four and a half feet tall, she wasn`t that scary. Insulated inside my cultural cocoon, I have no idea what characters most Halloween costumes represent. Last year`s fire eating was more exciting than glow-in-the-dark hula hoops (see October 30, 2021). The weather was perfect, my camera and flash performed well, and (most of) the people were nice.

October 30, 2022
`Messiah` wasn`t the only oratorio that Handel wrote. I seem to take photos at this church an awful lot. This work isn`t performed very often -- maybe because it requires a choir, orchestra and six vocal soloists. I was asked to take a good photo of David Crean, the new director of the Bach Society of Dayton. I got it. David had a successful debut with the Bach Society! It was an excellent performance of an enormous oratorio.

October 31, 2022
You`ll have to take my word for it that since my car was wrecked I`ve eaten more fruit (see October 5, 2020). Signs of progress (see October 18 above). I seem to be on a big screen. I seem to be on a giant screen. And the month ends with a windy day in fall.
