During this time of year, they flock out of desperation, so if one of them finds food they all converge on it. Welcome to the Oregon District. Don`t fall in a hole. Red alert. Here I was questioned by a suspicious cop. Have the Mexican containment laws gone into effect already? Sorry, your delivery may be delayed.

Sometimes it`s hard to interpret the news. Pressure! Pushing down on me, pressing down on you. DAVID BOWIE Not only birds get desperate at this time of year. During the winter, I take pictures like this. After 13 years of digital photography, I`m approaching a data storage crisis. I`m running out of shoe boxes!

I reluctantly went outside, telling myself, `Tomorrow, today will seem warm.` But today was still cold today. The cruel joke of winter: bright, sunny and cold. The water is high, I cannot cross o`er. A steely gaze. There was a building here yesterday.

January 5, 2017
Honestly, it was cold today. I walked down an icy sidewalk for this terrible photo. Black goes with everything, so I wear all black. It was a busy day for first responders. No parking.

January 6, 2017
Bitterly cold: so cold, people become bitter about it. There`s nothing worth looking at down at ground level. I think I saw a thaw. I ended up with exactly five photos today, and even that was a struggle. In honor of Dayton`s dancing sisters.

There`s nothing like sitting outside on a sunny day. The prairie that was so full of life is now a wasteland. Winter. What a dumb idea. The birds will soon get desperate enough to eat these. When the leaves fall and the nests are abandoned, where do the birds go?

Dangerous beauty. A couple of official photographers were inside the ring, but I preferred the `Suicide Seating` area near the turn. Typical roller derby names: Kay Ottick, Tara Hole-Inu, Peppermint Splatty, Sarah Cuda, Miss Demeanor. Sometimes I take blurry pictures on purpose. There`s an entire physics course here: energy, mass, velocity, momentum, trajectory, friction, centrifugal force.

Bus drivers and mechanics have been working without a contract since 2015, and no pay increases since 2014. Their requests to arbitrate a new contract were refused. After talks ended unsuccessfully yesterday afternoon, the Mayor and City Commission compelled both parties to keep negotiating into the evening to avoid a strike. Union representatives and RTA management walked away from the negotiation table last night at 11:53pm. The main bus depot was fenced in and the strike began. During the strike, RTA`s Project Mobility will continue to give rides to people for whom it is medically necessary. To help accommodate thousands of people left without transportation, discounts were offered for first-time Uber riders and also users of Dayton`s bike sharing program.

Will the ice hold me too? This ice floe, complete with ducks and barrel, floated by. My heart and your step must not fail to be light. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR Someone tried to break into this door, but the glass stopped them. So they just broke through a window. Wide open skies.

She`s illustrating her memoir (see December 16, 2016). Indoor fog. Car windows are useless. Car mirrors are useless. Slowly resolving my data storage crisis (see January 3 above), I`m copying CDs (left) onto DVDs (right).

I walked outside this morning just like it was spring. The first step is to turn off the TV and the voices that tell you what to think about the world and the people in it. Well, make sure to build your home brick by boring brick or the wolf`s gonna blow it down. PARAMORE Embarrassed by your unruly beard? The birds and I were surprised by the warm weather.

Larry Coressel, my coworker at WDPR, has been on the air at 6:00am every weekday for more than 30 years. Larry says he wakes up at about 4:00am every morning, when the alarm goes off or a cat jumps on his head. The Mayor of Dayton, Nan Whaley, surprised Larry this morning by dropping by the studio with a proclamation. In honor of his faithful service to the community, today was designated as Larry Coressel Day in Dayton. And I did my part by creating the design on the cake.

It may not be art, but it`s better than I could do. Today was cold and rainy, but I saw a rainbow. The dirty secret about your car (well, one of them). Please recycle. Winter lodgings (see June 13, 2015).

January 15, 2017
Why go outside in the cold to take bad pictures when I can do it indoors? Somehow I managed to pay $8.90 for grapes. Are we at war with the grape-producing countries of the world? Still cheap. My new/old desktop image (see November 7, 2010). I like it bright when I`m in a room.

January 16, 2017
Let `em try to break in now (see January 10 above). Remember that time the sun came out? Muse Machine put on an incredible production of `Hairspray` this weekend. Now run and tell that! Okay, that`s four. I just need one more photo for today. Forget my data storage crisis -- I`m running out of room for all my HATS!

January 17, 2017
At least they have each other. Humans. What a bad idea. `I am duck -- hear me quack!` Things I will never understand No. 147. Remember that time the sun came out -- yesterday?

Every day is flag day. Covering up a downtown eyesore. Gothic never goes out of style. The only way to get this shot is to stand in the street. There were TVs on in the dentist`s waiting room AND the examination room, so I couldn`t escape Kelly Ripa.

January 19, 2017
I suppose there`s a reason for that pattern. The river is almost back to normal -- the NEW normal. This isn`t what I took a picture of. I changed my mind. Have you ever been puked on by a building? Let`s settle this like Americans.

January 20, 2017
Nature ALWAYS wins. The morning paper. Today may not look like much, but at least it was warm. Now that`s a long train trip. Ready for my morning commute.

January 21, 2017
The weather was unseasonably warm today. It`s the middle of winter: let`s put on a show! Janis lives. The audience voted for their favorites . . . . . . but the judges had to make the hard decisions.

January 22, 2017
I can`t reveal where I took this photo. Monogamy in flight (see April 8, 2005). There were no trees nearby. Ah, the things we tell ourselves. Among the trash cans.

The rocks are no longer loose, so the sign isn`t needed. Eyebrows on fleek. It`s just one selfie after another with me. Immigration policy. The day went went by in a blur.

January 25, 2017
You recognize him, right? Oh, the river smelled bad. The game is played on ice, but not with ice skates. After days of disappointing photos, this made me happy. A Bach cello recital for the twenty-first century.

January 27, 2017
I hate it when a cat leaves footprints on my car hood. People who live beside the river will ALWAYS hear this. What if you had to eat grass for lunch? The ice is scarred from that strange game (see January 25 above). Let me be perfectly clear: I hate winter.

January 28, 2017
Photographs by Brother John Lemker are on display at Gallery St. John in Beavercreek through February 12. Snow moss. If you was a fish, Mother Nature`d take care of you. You don`t think them fish just die when it gets to be winter, do ya? `The Catcher in the Rye` by J. D. SALINGER The Song of Bernadette. Windblown.

January 29, 2017
There comes a day, usually in January, when the birds are desperate enough to eat berries from the trees. I`m not as desperate as the birds, but I`m getting close. A little skin moisturizer might help. Poor fooled and foolish soul! Know now that death is but a blind, false door that nowhere leads. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR Cold as ice.

January 30, 2017
I take a lot of pictures of cakes (see January 13 above). He`s smiling because he never has to work anymore. Cake is good for you, especially with a can of Coke. Richard is a Buckeyes fan. I don`t care about football, but I do like buckeyes.

The first 52,000 were with someone else driving. Ever onward, ever upward. Mud, mud, glorious mud! There`s nothing quite like it for soothing the blood. MICHAEL FLANDERS AND DONALD SWANN No sleeping. Rust, rust, glorious rust!
