Don`t expect to find much beauty in the city. You very rarely get the whole picture from me. Hey, nice hat -- er, horns. Can you hear me, Major Tom? DAVID BOWIE Keep on rollin`.

April 2, 2014
In the alley outside an apartment, not a bar. My town. Soon afterward, large black papery ash fell from the sky. All is well with the printer. East Third and Wayne Avenue.

`Everyone! It`s the color guard world championships!` Hopefully, practice will make perfect. Teams from nine countries got a rainy welcome to Dayton. Just before the show, only she knows what she`s thinking. Meanwhile, in the merchandise tent.

This is the catch face. There`s also a drop face, but I`d rather not show that. The crowd gasped in surprise as she appeared wearing a different costume than she had on moments earlier. Show some enthusiasm and I`ll take your picture. Throw some confetti and I`ll take your picture. After the competition ends, the celebration begins.

April 6, 2014
Everyone needs friends they can lean on. I got tired just watching them dance. Dancers dance with their arms and faces too. Now you try it. Learning to fly in Dayton, Ohio.

April 7, 2014
I belatedly discovered a photo of mine in the newspaper. Other pictures of mine will be published in the yearbook. I doubt the seniors need to be told how many days are left. This was the setting for a series of Family Portraits I took. In four days I took 23,254 photos of color guard. See?

April 8, 2014
`Call it in the air.` The red team seems to be dominating on offense. The red team seems to be dominating on defense. However, the blue team won. Engrossed in the game.

April 9, 2014
They appear vigilant. I took lots more pictures of daffodils, but I`ll spare you. These birds are not welcome in my neighborhood. I don`t expect you to understand why I take these pictures. A dangerous combination.

April 10, 2014
I guess she doesn`t play the drums. This explains why you heard drumming today. The percussion world championships are in Dayton this weekend. It`s a spectacle that gets bigger every year. Maybe he has a test right after the show. Marie Antoinette meets Lady Gaga.

April 11, 2014
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it! No one wants to be defeated. MICHAEL JACKSON Hanging around the UD Arena. In the morning I photographed percussion. In the evening I photographed percussion. At night I dreamed percussion. Maybe they all have a test right after the show. `It`s a XYLOPHONE, not a marimba!!`

April 12, 2014
Percussion is just good clean fun. Fantastic follicles. It all started with a plastic drum kit when she was little. This weekend I saw shows that were hard to believe. This photograph is flirting with perfection.

April 13, 2014
Spring has been happening without me, so after taking pictures of the percussion world championships until 1:30 this morning, I got up early and took photos for myself. I had just thought to myself, `There are normally snakes around here.` Then this came slithering out of the water. Just one of a million billion golden blossoms. Next stop Canada. Robin whiskers.

April 14, 2014
I went home from work early feeling dizzy. My ears were messed up, maybe due to wearing earplugs all weekend. The idea of renovating a home makes me shutter. Twelve DVDs of percussion photos ready to be delivered. Instead of a blood-red lunar eclipse, here`s some rain. And here`s the same scene when the camera decided to focus on the window screen instead of the street outside. Doesn`t it look a little bit like the moon?

April 15, 2014
April fool! Yep -- the same thing seen from another angle. Otherwise, I wouldn`t have five photos today. It was that kind of day. Prepare to meet The Knife! Don`t like Ohio weather? Just wait five minutes.

April 16, 2014
Threelips. It was barking like crazy. Spring has arrived out of the clear blue sky. No, I`m fine. Stop following me. It`s just a cough. My daily photos show you a bit of everything, even the . . .

April 17, 2014
Fences are good at keeping dogs in -- and out. Maybe this is why there are ants in the room where I work. Mr. Bigglesworth under glass. My first butterfly photo of the year is a happy occasion. Why I`d rather rent an apartment than own a house.

April 18, 2014
During nesting season, three`s a crowd. Fifth Street shop window. Always be ready to change direction. That`s my whole life. We`ll leave a light on for ya.

April 19, 2014
A church pew in downtown Dayton. It was a sunny Saturday, so we stayed in the shadows. She didn`t mind walking down smelly alleyways since she grew up on a pig farm. Hanging around the baseball stadium. No trickery: that`s what her eyes -- and lips -- looked like.

April 20, 2014
The park was full of people being photographed in their Easter finery. I just wanted to shoot flowers and bugs. Today I`m listening to Handel`s `Messiah.` You do know it`s an Easter piece, don`t you? Get the fire extinguisher. Can I live here, please? I`ll mow the grass. Meanwhile, back in the Oregon District, I`m on an assignment taking photos of mailboxes.

April 21, 2014
Another day of shooting mailboxes in the Oregon District. I like these, though they didn`t make the cut on my project. The Oregon District mascot. I abandoned the mailboxes when I saw this familiar snout (see January 4, 2013). Fake flowers for my photography workshop on Saturday.

April 22, 2014
I didn`t need my alarm clock to wake up this morning. Thanks guys! Looks like it`s the female`s job to build the nest. Duck lunch. Get some air. `It`s pretty here, isn`t it?` `Yes Barbara, and that`s why I asked you to meet me. I wanted to ask you something important.` `Oh Jerry, let`s not spoil what we have!`

April 23, 2014
At the busiest time of day in the middle of the busiest intersection, there`s this. Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof. PHARRELL WILLIAMS Why I walk rather than drive. Do you know what defenestration means? Look it up. I walk, others ride (see April 1 above).

April 24, 2014
Temperence lesson. There were thousands of them. On a spring evening, even ugly things are photogenic. It was singing a happy song. My mailbox project is framed and ready to give to our neighborhood letter carrier who is retiring after 35 years.

April 25, 2014
So I have a pointy head. I`m getting treatments for it. It had to be some color, but why yellow? Panning random cars at an intersection. No skateboards. Yes skateboards.

April 26, 2014
Between the cold and the heat lies the time of perfection. Two bees or not two bees? Seen through the trees. Closer, ever closer. Today I taught a workshop on closeup nature photography. Hopefully I learned something from the class.

April 27, 2014
A picture of springtime. Onelip. Meanwhile, there was a lady from Denmark talking to me. I told her she came to visit at the perfect time of year. A photo like this is simple. All you need is patience, perception, skill, high quality camera equipment and luck. They just discovered the tadpoles (see April 24 above). `That`s an awful lot of baby frogs!`

April 28, 2014
My first iris of the year, strangely lit by a streetlight. It appears they aren`t going to put the cross back. He`s a busy boy when he takes all his pictures at night. Another nocturnal wanderer. Bilbo`s attic.

April 29, 2014
I failed to achieve the potential of this photo opportunity. Flap your wings if you feel like a room without a roof. Failure No. 2 for today. I walked two blocks out of my way for these shadows. An old building in a new puddle.

April 30, 2014
One cannot be a successful portrait photographer without a strong understanding of human anatomy and physiology. At the peak of his song, his whole body shook. A house finch doesn`t exactly sing -- it kind of squeaks. Avoid the temptation of making white things too bright. Family album.
