August 1, 2022
Time to turn the page. It was one of those magical mornings when the breeze blew fragrantly through the portapotties of the Oregon District. A scene from my minuscule back yard. Sometimes, when I don`t know which way to turn, I unexpectedly receive the guidance that I need. From the yard of my neighbor Ann Heller (1936 - 2022).

I was on the radio this morning at 6am, so I set my alarm early. But I couldn`t sleep and got up at 4:15am. I always knew people slept in my garage (see October 19, 2021), but I had to step over one of them today. This wasn`t here this morning when I arrived at work. Paul Laurence Dunbar hangs out by the public library. I usually close the door behind me early and observe the sunset through my windows.

Sometimes the first picture of the day turns out nicely. Symbiosis: they keep each other alive. A goldfinch takes a morning bath by rubbing its feathers against dewy leaves. Shoulda used sunscreen. Do the dew.

August 4, 2022
A new flower this morning, with a different bee on it. Hanging out at the park. If everything in a photo is in focus, something`s wrong. As I watch hornets make a nest out of their puke, I feel admiration, revulsion and fear simultaneously. Bad bunny behind bars.

August 5, 2022
A dew-laden blade of grass and its tiny inhabitant. There`s a constellation in a spider web. In early August, flower gardens still look good. Behind the scenes. Good bunny hops freely (see August 4 above).

August 6, 2022
I think I already took this photo on April 5, 2011. Getting some air at the library. The same face and shoulder seen on November 14, 2021. I spent the afternoon in Solla Sollew. I led another photography class with adventurous students (see July 10, 2022).

I`ve had awkward encounters with a painter lately. The landscape of laundry day. Roscolux Cinegel #4690 CalColor 90 Red. I`m not a vegetarian, but I can see it from here. The painting`s done, and now there`s a powerful smell.

Broken dreams. This fence was just installed in my neighborhood, but it`s old and rusted. I also photographed it on June 14, 2022. Monday mornings have a bad reputation, but I`m grateful to be outside on this beautiful summer day. With more time, I could have probably done better. Butterflies are scarce this year, so you get a moth.

Trim your fingernails before playing the violin. The last time this trombone was played? This clarinet player was named Reed. From the sacred to the profane in the trombone section. `My father bought this violin for me in 1946 when I was in 9th grade.`

Why use the parking space when you can just block the street? Yes, I had trouble getting started this morning too. The people of Dayton are creative and artistic. I don`t normally identify with graffiti, but I did today. A gigantic Sylvester Stallone will soon adorn this wall.

August 11, 2022
Has it been four years already, John King? (see August 25, 2018) His fans showed up and sang along with the songs. It was a nice night to be outside for some live music. I LOVE MA . . . CARONI AND CHEESE? Progress report (see August 10 above).

August 12, 2022
The Mexican photographer is back at GermanFest (see August 13, 2021; August 10, 2019; and August 10, 2018). There were lots of other people taking photos, but I had a badge that said Official Photographer. The word for cute in German is niedlich. For $3 she`ll let you take ONE whack at a nail. Good luck! I had finished taking photos and was walking home, but then I spotted these two.

August 13, 2022
Wait -- that`s not a polka band. A well-dressed German family. The word for twins in German is Zwillinge. I`m guessing at least one of them is named Helga. I said, `Face painting is for any age.` She said, `You`re never too old, until you`re dead.`

Ah, the beauty of summertime. It rained for a while, so we sat around and chatted. The funny part is that I demonstrate the poses I want. Too bad there isn`t someone there to take my picture. The picture of the day came pretty early in the day. After the rain stopped, we picked up where we left off.

After a few days of photos happening right in front of me, I had to resort to going out and finding them today. I had a jacket that same color in 10th grade. This is cicada hunting season for cardinals. I`m grateful to be outside for another summer morning. My rose began to open, and its hue was sweet to me as to it sun and dew. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR

I suspect foul play. Butterflies are almost nonexistent this year, so you get a skipper instead. I`m trying to get my first decent photo of a hummingbird all year when a guy wants to talk to me about my lens. When everybody goes one way, go the other way. A bumblebee isn`t graceful, but it gets the job done.

The plural of emoji is emoji. Don`t blame me. Last time I took a photo from this spot, I was chased off by a security guard (see October 15, 2016). I was chased off by a security guard again (see October 15, 2016). I fight authority, authority always wins. The metal monstrosity in front of the Dayton Convention Center is being dismantled (see August 21, 2012). Progress report (see August 11 above).

August 18, 2022
Today I followed the UD River Stewards on their annual adventure (see August 18, 2010, and August 15, 2019). They learned about the fish in our local rivers (and I learned a lot just by listening). Then they got into their kayaks and headed downtown (but I took my car and got there before they did). It was a perfect day to get soaked in a giant fountain. And one by one they all went over the rocks safely.

A parting gift from the painter apparently (see August 7 above). Be sure to notice the pizza planet in the upper right. I asked the artist if the mural has a title. He said, `No, I leave it up to people to make their own interpretation.` This truck has more personality than some people I know. On days when I don`t have a plan for photos, I just wander around taking pictures of stuff I come across.

A few blocks from the Oregon District, there`s another historic neighborhood that is much, much, much different. Today much of the musical talent of Dayton gathered on porches in St. Anne`s Hill. When there`s another photographer around, I try to stay out of their shot. Porchfest got off to a noisy start. Wondering what all the drumming is about.

August 21, 2022
Two Dayton-area universities faced off tonight. The game was supposed to start at 6pm, but there was a tornado warning in effect at that time. For goalkeepers, a soccer game means standing around for a long time, punctuated by moments of sheer terror. It was a low-scoring game thanks to heroics by the goalkeepers. Her heroics were followed by a laceration of the scalp.

This garden won`t be beautiful for long, so I zoomed out. This damp little bird sang a damp little song. When I take pictures of this spot, there`s usually a cute girl in the shot (see August 14 above and May 21, 2022). There`s always a chipmunk here. I think it`s a MetroParks employee (see June 7, 2020; August 4, 2020; August 17, 2020; July 27, 2021; June 12, 2022, and June 23, 2022). Did I mention it was damp?

August 23, 2022
I`m grateful that our river is still flowing as others go dry. There`s always a gull here. I think it`s a MetroParks employee. Weighing the pros and cons of getting soaked. It was a sunny day in Dayton. When I walk to work, I end up with interesting photos I would have missed in a car (see July 18, 2022).

August 24, 2022
This year`s brood doesn`t have red eyes (see May 23, 2021). Death spiral. Need any scrap metal (see August 17 above)? Nature is about collaboration between species. This reminds me of that famous movie that I never saw (see August 17 above).

August 25, 2022
The opportunity to walk to a free concert three nights a week has greatly expanded my musical horizons. Tonight it was Jenny and the Mexicats. I heard the name and knew that I had to go to this show. The band had people dancing in front of the stage (and then they invited them to dance on the stage). Musicians from different parts of the world played in Dayton, and then did a show in Chicago the next night. Jenny sang in Spanish, but she talked in British.

How not to park in the Oregon District: one vehicle in two spaces. How to park in the Oregon District: three vehicles in one space. Friday mood. Just to clarify, street musicians don`t play in the street. My neighbor across the street doesn`t say very much.

August 27, 2022
Red isn`t my color, but other people can wear it. There`s always a skipper here. I think it`s an Oakwood Parks & Leisure Services employee (see August 16 above). Blooms, bugs, beasts and birds. That is enough. I saw damp birds and wondered how they got that way. And now for something completely different.

August 28, 2022
This photo shoot was planned weeks in advance, and I anxiously watched the weather forecast for the day. It was hot, sunny and windy, but at least it didn`t rain. I unintentionally got my car in the window reflection. I told her about how I`ve taken pictures every day since 2004 and she said she was one year old when I started. I edit portraits in Photoshop, but she was kinda perfect.

August 29, 2022
I`ve been getting a lot of spam through my Web site, so I removed the feedback forms. Now I`m amused to watch people far away clicking around the site looking for them. Combustible. I kinda forgot to shave this morning. If I don`t do it on Monday, then I usually don`t shave until the next Monday. I drove to work today because the weather forecast said it would rain. It didn`t rain, so I wasted gas. There are some new lights in my parking garage.

August 30, 2022
During breakfast I watch them squirreling around outside. My backyard is tiny, but at least it has flowers. This probably kept somebody`s kid occupied for a while. Sometimes I even impress myself. I scraped my knees on the ground to get this shot.

August 31, 2022
He was singing a Christmas song. I had to stand in a smelly place to take this picture. Forgive me if I avoid shaking hands. Was it going up or down? [Wait . . . ] DOWN! I bought a couple of new flashes, but they were on sale. The more money I spend the more money I save, see?
