Lord willin` Oh I`m on my way to old Mexico. MARTY ROBBINS We all have our morning rituals. What`s up, dock? This bird is awake but idle. It`s important to know where to put the horizon in a photo.

The colors of autumn. Sometimes it helps to change your perspective (see August 1, 2019). Daydreaming. Flowers are bright and colorful symbols of emotions that can`t be seen. When plastic straws are banned, we`ll all be doing this.

The warning signs of winter. Flee the hemisphere now. I was at the park just in time for lawn mowing. Water comes out of the air. How convenient for plants, and for us humans. Bees spread pollen. How convenient for plants, and for us humans. This chipmunk was sitting EXACTLY where I expected it would be. Maybe one of us is in a rut.

The boys dress up. The girls dress up. It must be HOMECOMING! There was a game. And then there was HALFTIME!

October 5, 2019
Holly and Emily just keep getting better (see August 2, 2019). Become a professional slackliner and you`ll never work a day in your life. The last thing the squirrel saw. I never achieved anything when I was his age. I wanted to wait until I got older. What some people do for fun would be a perfect method of torture for me.

Dogs do what their owners tell them, even if it`s crazy. People do their share of crazy things too. Never volunteer for anything. Scaly. Don`t stand nearby when the dog shakes itself.

I would`ve made a good squirrel. I like to plan ahead. Home`s the best place after all when the leaves begin to fall. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR Why I still, after 15 years, take my camera outside with no idea of what I might come across. Urban beautification. America! America! God shed His grace on thee till selfish gain no longer stain the banner of the free. KATHARINE LEE BATES

As the sun sets on good weather, I get S. A. D. about it. Tiffany Clark finished her mural in the Oregon District (see August 27, 2019) and I`m dismayed (see February 14, 2019) that an electronic billboard was immediately built in front of it. The future is petroleum-free. The future is self-propelled. Early sunset. Can I just hibernate through this winter?

Transforming a Sinclair student into pirate John Silver. Never make a gang of pirates angry. Looking for a space in the Sinclair parking garage. If a pirate offers you a treasure map, just walk away. Only SPECIAL people can take photos during a play.

I won`t be X-ing this year (see October 11 & 12, 2018). Life, life, everywhere. Cormorants, not ducks -- but you knew that already. Another photographer sitting by the river said a group of canoes was on the way, but I had to keep ramblin` on. Other people`s [dangerous] photo shoots.

The green `rust` on the roof helps protect the copper underneath, just like it does on the Statue of Liberty. The restoration of the Arcade won`t be finished soon. Only a photographer would think this is interesting. Smoking: I just don`t get it (see February 5, 2018). Smoking: I just don`t get it (see October 11, 2019 -- oh wait, that`s today).

October 12, 2019
You`re so vain. Tunnel vision. I grew you a cat. I sculpted you a cat. I guess this makes me a paid playwright.

October 13, 2019
Today I made my annual trip to the roller skating rink (see September 25, 2018). I was actually taking pictures of the shirt rather than her. She was getting ready for College Night, which ends at 1am. She`s the prettiest girl on eight wheels. Her motto is: Skate Don`t Hate.

What I can do because I always carry my camera. This variegated fritillary might survive the winter if it gets out of Ohio immediately and heads south. The water was placid and so was I. I might survive the winter if I get out of Ohio immediately and head south. No geese this time (see July 16, 2018).

Surfaces of downtown. Sanctified shingles. All hail the red, white and . . . silver. I miss u. The day could not have been more perfectly beautiful, and yet -- it`s October.

October 16, 2019
The best lunches are those that I don`t have to pay for. Life is dangerous enough without wheeling into traffic. The vegan`s birthday (see September 8, 2019). Keeping an eye on my car during lunch. The highlight of my day.

October 17, 2019
On the coldest day of the season. Waiting to serve you -- or, maybe to sever you. One of us is in a rut (see October 3 and 12 above). The Gem City. I guess these are disposable. They last about a month.

October 18, 2019
The highlight of my day was a visit from Holly and Emily (see October 5 above). Holly from Holly & Emily. Emily from Holly & Emily. Holly and Emily from Holly & Emily. They gave me a t-shirt!

Requiem for a lens. I bought this one after breaking my previous lens (see August 9, 2010) It served me well, but today I broke it and will now need a new one. They don`t bounce when they hit the floor. The camera still works, but the lens won`t focus. The pen holder is more useful now than the lens. My brand new lens should be delivered by October 22.

October 20, 2019
Death and the Maiden. I had a brush with death today. An altar full of names and remembrances of the dead. Dayton is full of people who are different than me, and that`s a good thing for me and the city. I took an unintentional reflected selfie, and managed to not drop my camera today.

October 21, 2019
Summer. Fall. Some people invest in gold, but I prefer copper-zinc. I`m shooting all closeups today, since I`m down a lens. I`ve been doing a lot of work for a playwrighting class.

October 22, 2019
I spent the morning reading in a little radio studio. I volunteered at the Radio Reading Service, which reads periodicals and books for people with disabilities. No, I did not arrive at 7:37am. The studio was in a beautiful new building, but I had trouble taking pictures. Did I mention I`m down a lens? A box arrived today. Inside it was another box. Inside it was another box. Inside it was a new lens.

A man in a hurry. Rollin` rollin` rollin` on the river. JOHN FOGERTY After years of photographing herons on the river, I finally saw one catch a fish. I couldn`t take two photos of cyclists that looked the same. I feel a kinship with this contemplative individual.

The pumpkin sits there waiting for its jack-o-lantern face, Which soon enough that orange smoothness it will thus replace. Decisions will be left to both the grandkids and the dad Regarding its expression: happy, scary, shocked or mad. I won`t be there when they begin the scooping of the seeds.

October 25, 2019
But hope they`re toasted, a tradition Nana always heeds. Next Friday, when we babysit, I`ll see what they have made. Which may be in the garbage or, I`m hoping, still displayed. `Awaiting a Face` by Ilene Bauer Photos of the Stoddard Avenue Pumpkin Glow preparation.

On the street where I live. Tree huggers beware. The doll isn`t scary. The person who put it here is. The sheriff (on the left) said, `Oh, we`re cute.` She`s a dragon this year (see October 27, 2018).

October 27, 2019
She shines during golden hour. She shines anywhere and anytime. The beauty of autumn. She drove a long way to meet me, and I`m glad she did. The year`s last, loveliest smile, thou com`st to fill with hope the human heart and strengthen it to bear the storms awhile, till winter`s frowns depart. JOHN HOWARD BRYANT

October 28, 2019
One day I found two pumpkin seeds. I planted one and pulled the weeds. It sprouted roots and a big, long vine. A pumpkin grew. I called it mine. The pumpkin was quite round and fat.

October 29, 2019
I really am quite proud of that. But there is something I`ll admit That has me worried just a bit. I ate the other seed, you see. Now will it grow inside of me?

October 30, 2019
Anyone who says you should replace your smoke alarm battery every six months probably sells batteries. Other people`s diets have affected my eating habits. I don`t pay any attention to what I eat, and I`m still alive. Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) were not part of my life. But they seem to be part of every vegan meal.

October 31, 2019
The Eagles went face to face against the Freddies. Somebody asked which team I was shooting pictures of. I said, `I`m in here just because it`s cold outside.` She stopped the ball with her face and had to sit down. Smells like teen spirit. The Eagles were elated and the Freddies frustrated.
