No man is an island. This one is more of a promontory. I saw many migrating monarchs, but got just one photo. The Ohio flamingo. I don`t really like fall, but today was a perfect day. Crocodiles are rare in Ohio.

October 2, 2017
Right here, right now, there is no other place I want to be. JESUS JONES Chasing his shadow. I don`t really like fall, but today was a perfect day. Quittin` time. Another squirrel with special dietary needs (see May 3, 2016).

October 3, 2017
It was another perfectly beautiful day. How many more? The water is low, the algae is high. Sunshine or shadow, or gold day or gray day, life must be lived as our destinies rule. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR I have my ducks in a row. There`s a lot going on here, but nobody notices.

A bird of prey considers having me for lunch. A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. ISAIAH 53:3 Someone`s misguided compassion: Cheerios, a mound of raisins and moldy bread. (See August 19, 2016) My flash stopped working (see September 29, 2017) so today I made an expensive trip to the camera store. It`s not the first time that something broke and forced me to upgrade my equipment (see August 9, 2010).

October 5, 2017
Fiddling with flashes, waiting for my first victim. See, new camera equipment is always worth the price (see September 1, 2010). I`m trying very hard not to show the parking lot. And then, suddenly emerging from the fog. I`m still stuck in 1983.

October 6, 2017
What`s up? What`s down. Friday night Knights. Rituals of youth. There was also a game going on.

October 7, 2017
I`m teaching an autumn photo workshop in two weeks. Will there still be any leaves left by then? Screeching noisily overhead. I almost walked into its massive web. Time is running out for flowers and bees. One of the few things moving on the prairie today.

Children should be raised to appreciate music. Puccini. Shostakovich. Puccini again. Their happily ever after will begin soon.

October 9, 2017
Sign of the times. Fall has fallen in my hometown. EMERGENCY! `Orville, stop it! That`s so immature.` Roll on!

October 10, 2017
I don`t believe in UFOs . . . . . . and Nessie isn`t true . . . . . . Bigfoot`s just a hairy suit . . . . . . but I believe in you! Will this be coming to YOUR mailbox?

October 11, 2017
Am I the last of my kind? JASON ISBELL Message in a bottle. Your latest cormorant update (see September 28, 2017). This is my best shot during a difficult week. Basically a rat with a bushy tail.

October 12, 2017
Remember how my two lights used to work together (see October 5 above)? Well, they don`t anymore. Have a seat. No, really -- you can HAVE it. A new face in the neighborhood. Remember the fallen. This is my worst shot during a difficult week.

October 13, 2017
Casual Friday. A ragged warning sign about the approach of winter. Hunting for a morning frog. Now that`s one big spider (see September 23, 2016). My neighbors offer child care services in their home.

October 14, 2017
Into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul. JOHN MUIR The sunken forest. Sunny sparkles. I did this accidentally the first time, then I perfected it. Autumn means the end of so many good things.

October 15, 2017
Little brother follows his big sister`s example (see February 15, 2016). Big sister keeps a watchful eye on little brother. Time to get some gas. Pictures don`t come easy on cold and rainy days. I`m trying very hard to like this opera, but I`m failing.

October 16, 2017
Photographic Tip for Today: try not to let anything get between you and the subject you`re taking a picture of. Come when my heart is full of grief or when my heart is merry, Come with the falling of the leaf or with the redd`ning cherry. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR You can`t hide from me. Today I figured out that I`m solar-powered. I brought you a leaf.

October 17, 2017
It`s nine years old and doesn`t work (see September 29, 2017). So what could I possibly lose by trying to fix it? After watching three YouTube videos (only one of them in English), I know how to disassemble the flash unit. The only thing that doesn`t work is that horizontal glass tube. It`s probably flashed a zillion times in nine years. However, that whole assembly needs to be replaced, and it`s connected to the flash with lots of little wires. After getting shocked twice and losing one screw, I successfully removed the assembly. Now I need to find a shady parts dealer who`ll sell me a new one cheaply.

October 18, 2017
Here are my cookies. Maybe they`ll bring yours later. The monkeys were making a lot of noise up there. Nocturnal quacker. Bell bottoms are coming back in style. Downtown sidewalks can be dangerous.

October 19, 2017
Did you see that movie `Blade Runner`? Going up. Will birds miss us when all of the people are gone? Riverside romance. I pay money to park my car here.

October 20, 2017
I don`t know why new water pipes need to be installed. The old ones have been working just fine since 1870. I walked back and forth to work and couldn`t have asked for a more perfect day. October has been nice so far. Nature is where you find it -- like in a parking lot. He said he used to design tattoos, but that he wanted to change to an art form that was `less permanent.` I didn`t get shocked, I found the lost screw, and it took just a few minutes to replace (see October 17 above).

October 21, 2017
Another perfect fall day. This is getting to be a habit. Morning on the prairie. Saturday is a good day to sleep in. I have sharp eyesight when I`m looking for pictures . . . . . . however, someone else spotted this snakeskin.

October 22, 2017
When I took this, I didn`t know it would be butterfly day. I find green eyes attractive. At this point, I began to sense a theme for the day. Black swallowtails were flying around, but they never found the kind of flower they wanted and didn`t land. There were more butterflies, but here are my daily five.

October 23, 2017
Someone`s at the door! Quick, clean up this place! Okay, now let them in. Pictures taken at work aren`t very interesting, but . . . . . . at least I`ve taken photos for 4,900 days in a row. I have to fix another flash (see October 20 above).

October 24, 2017
Despite what the calendar says, winter began today. When it`s cold outside, I take more kitchen photos. Aspects of a spatula. Time shall unfold what pleated cunning hides. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Born in 1732, George is starting to show his age.

October 25, 2017
Showing why she`s the team MVP. Let`s hear it for the team that`s 0-18, but they still put on their uniforms and keep trying. [They lost again tonight.] Defense could be better, but nice hair. Coming your way. Keep your eye on the ball.

October 26, 2017
Westminster Cathedral, you`re bringing me down. You stood and you watched as my baby left town. Yeah, I`m disappointed too that Fronana is never open (see October 22, 2015). `Mom, why is that guy with the camera on his knees?` `Dunno honey, just keep walking and don`t look at him.` This was done in the camera, not in Photoshop. Hopefully I`m done fixing flashes (see October 23 above). I`ve never had three working together before.

October 27, 2017
If you stand by the river long enough, you`ll probably get a good picture of a gull (and maybe get pooped on). Saw them coming, got ready, stood and waited. Meanwhile, on the water below. Life imitates art (see May 18, 2016). I saw this and rushed to my office to get my camera.

October 28, 2017
A junior Ghostbuster played a spooky song. This scary clown played piano with her mask on. A new old piano. Maybe next year he`ll play in the Halloween recital. A grownup Ghostbuster at the Oregon District party.

October 29, 2017
Preparing for a parade. It was unorganized and so we all waited for it to start. It was a cold day to stand around outside. The parade finally started, went 20 yards, and stopped. We could use more community events that are FOR something and fewer that are AGAINST something.

October 30, 2017
Evening in America. They pay $100 to park in a garage that isn`t enclosed. No problem, I`ll put my car in the closet for a month (see October 20 above). I invented a new sandwich. Fresh is better than frozen.

October 31, 2017
Every day, hot or cold, animals have to find their food. I guess the good thing about the arrival of cold weather is that there are fewer people around to bother me. Niagara Falls seen from 10,000 feet. I was cold and ready to go home, but then I saw this. And with that, a very long month comes to an end.
