Human beings can learn a lot from the millipede. Gently down the stream. Life is but a dream. Solitary sculler. Have you ever been told what to do by somebody who isn`t going through what you`re going through?

October 2, 2016
Some people walk their dogs, other people fly them. The joy of kayaking. The law of gravity was temporarily suspended today. The most impressive example of flying I saw today. They got a little more crazy when they saw my camera.

October 3, 2016
`Mmmmm, cheese ball!` This is 1/8000th of a second from my afternoon walk. Fresh seafood caught daily. A giant shadow passed by and I looked up. It was being harassed by tiny birds bravely defending their territory. It was such a blazing beautiful day, and I`m fortunate to be alive to see it, hear it, feel it and breathe it in!

October 4, 2016
This is worth getting up early for. There`s very little background clutter in my photos. They were everywhere, but didn`t want photographs. Not sorry to see you go. Complexity upon complexity.

October 5, 2016
One wet dog, coming up! Wistful Wilbur Wright. How not to treat your dog. May all that have life be delivered from suffering. Why don`t you go jump in a lake?

October 6, 2016
Sometimes you just need a guy who can use a pickaxe. Life lives. Construction workers nearby gave me quizzical looks. Hawks are very religious. The lunch counter long before lunchtime.

October 7, 2016
I emerge from the shadows for another morning walk. The dashing dove. This time of year, the sun gets up later than I do. The graceful gull. Adumbration and obscuration.

She drove in from the country to meet me in the city. I wasn`t going to let hurricane-force winds stop us. When standing in those shoes, she was taller than me. We came across a couch, so I had her sit on it. We came across a motorcycle, so I had her sit on it.

Another trip to the big city (see May 1, 2016). They still make apple butter the old fashioned way. Actually, a robot could do this more efficiently. I`m not sure what this guy is making, but I want one. He still makes pictures the old fashioned way.

October 10, 2016
So long, Vivian Maier, I can`t believe your song is gone so soon. I`ll remember Vivian Maier. All of the nights we`d harmonize till dawn. Street photographers may come and street photographers may go and never change your point of view. When I run dry I stop awhile and think of you. So long, Vivian Maier. So long, so long.

October 11, 2016
The birds have given up hunting bugs and fallen back to eating berries -- a disturbing reminder winter is coming. Go easy on those berries. They need to last all winter. The upstairs neighbor makes it hard to sleep. I`m in blissful denial about the end of summer. A woman shouted at me from the parking lot, `DID YOU SEE THE SUNRISE?` Uh, no, I was late this morning.

October 12, 2016
Spinning in the breeze, waiting to be discovered by me. Possibly a Halloween decoration, or a particularly offensive political statement. A political statement here is very tempting . . . Insidious. Follow your own vision.

October 13, 2016
There is, one knows not what sweet mystery about this sea, whose gently awful stirrings seems to speak of some hidden soul beneath. MOBY DICK Splashdown. Just one flower a day is all I need to preserve summer. On the roof, it`s peaceful as can be. GERRY GOFFIN There are no front porches in the city, just benches.

October 14, 2016
My second annual photograph of someone dropping lunch at TEDx Dayton (see October 16, 2015). The Learning Family. It does mean a thing cuz it do got that swing. Obviously, it`s still summer. Domestic violence awareness month.

October 15, 2016
I`m hearing Ozzy Osbourne in my head right now. I`m not sure I deserve a day like this on October 15. Urban landscape. Time for me to leave, apparently. Hot stuff.

October 16, 2016
The seasons have come and gone for 135 years. That time of year thou mayst in me behold when yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang upon those boughs which shake against the cold. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Everything must change. Nothing stays the same. BERNARD IGHNER Indian summer. October is the treasurer of the year, and all the months pay bounty to her store. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR

Why go to Mars when there`s a wasteland much closer? The modern office buildings are chasing the sun and the wind is racing after the day, and everybody`s chasing the beauty they don`t have. GEORGE EZRA Sunny = summer. See, it`s summer! Just ignore the bee`s worn out eyes. Because I could not stop for Death he kindly stopped for me. The carriage held but just ourselves and Immortality. EMILY DICKINSON

October 18, 2016
A lifeless morning on the prairie. This bug distracted me so the mosquitoes could attack. Bloomin` beauty. Have you heard about the new M&M color? Currently I`m reading `Jump Back, Paul: The Life and Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar` by Sally Derby.

October 19, 2016
You can live here on my porch if you catch lots of bugs. I`m very happy that I have a job -- and not this one. As crooked as a politician. Time is running out for Garden Station. I`ve got such a long way to go to make it to the border of Mexico. CHRISTOPHER CROSS

October 20, 2016
The seasons pass by in a blur. By the time you see this, it`s already dead. That one friend who always talks about exercise. By the time I saw this, it was already dead. Oh, I guess I need one more picture for today.

October 21, 2016
It was a rough night for the home team. This nearly ended in tragedy for people in the front row. Despite the best efforts of the home team, the visitors were simply better - both individually and as a team. That`s gotta hurt. Game face.

October 22, 2016
This morning I taught a workshop about taking pictures of wildlife, and then I sent the class out into the wild. There wasn`t much wildlife out there today. Eating one tiny seed at a time, this bird will stay alive. Birds eat some berries, but ignore others. I don`t know why, and I would probably eat the poisonous kind. This guy will sleep through winter and not have to eat.

October 23, 2016
Dayton commemorates the Day of the Dead. The bicycle held just himself and Immortality. #dayofthedead People of all kinds from Dayton and beyond get together to respectfully celebrate a Hispanic cultural tradition. The Day of the Dead parade gets bigger every year.

October 24, 2016
More new faces downtown (see September 22, 2016). While I shot this, a dude tried to hustle me for money saying he had `two -- no, three -- daughters at home.` She probably thought I wanted to hustle her for money. The flowers and I will enjoy the sun as long as we can. What Spiderman saw.

October 25, 2016
I get around downtown on foot. If fish sleep, they have nightmares about this guy. The job would go a lot faster if they agreed on a color. A feral cat hunts for food alongside the river. Birds wisely avoid the feral cat.

October 26, 2016
This country is all tied up in knots! (See February 2, 2016, and July 24, 2008) Looking up to the big guy (see October 24 above). This is your hometown, this is your hometown, this is your hometown. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Other pumpkins make fun of his speech impediment. Pictures I take when I`m cold.

October 27, 2016
The nut-gathering instinct is dangerous in the city. As if I didn`t already have enough reason to feel cold, the downtown ice skating rink is being installed. Leaves get EVERYWHERE. Time, time, time, see what`s become of me. PAUL SIMON And then I was mauled.

October 28, 2016
Dead bird on the sidewalk. Jimbo put it in his pocket. His soul needed a companion who knew his way about the sky. FRANK TEDESSO Dayton`s Big Dig goes on . . . and on . . . and on. Shadowy stairway. Pictures I take when I have 15 minutes. Preparing to keep the zombies out tomorrow night.

October 29, 2016
Her handmade costumes are amazing every year (see October 31, 2015, October 25, 2014, October 26, 2013, and October 27, 2012). These are a few of my favorite things: whiskers on kittens. I hope that washes off. Yes, it was screaming. Unbridled.

October 30, 2016
Your days are numbered, but if you provide for the next generation then you have fulfilled your purpose in life. Oh, and this applies to the butterfly too. Life is a one-way trip. Nice pants. How rude. They would swim away whenever I got close. It wasn`t warm -- it was hot today. I`m not complaining.

October 31, 2016
Okay, I guess there are some days I don`t despise fall. This is where you can find me. Have you read my column? Halloween jazz: `Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.` She`s the ginger Chewbacca! (See August 2, 2015).
