Every spring, the daffodils come first, then the tulips, followed by the color guard flags. Not just flags -- rifles, too. WHOOSH! Spooky shows are nothing new; using two flags is new. I`m warming up for the world championships coming soon.

The old car battery looked dull, so I got a shiny new one. Monday was a sun day. The salt-and-pepper look is popular now. Oh wow, thanks, Aunt Edith. Gosh, I really hope it fits. Springtime is fleeting.

Civilization was boring until someone invented the ball. In case you hadn`t noticed, basketball season is over. He could throw that speedball by you, make you look like a fool. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN With the bases loaded, you`re supposed to let it hit you. Winner of the game ball.

Uh, your pineapple is rusting. Or acorn, whatever that is. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow we shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, and watch where the chalk-white arrows go to the place where the sidewalk ends. SHEL SILVERSTEIN Waiting for your face in the place. `Come on, Smithers, keep up!` Besides May flowers, April showers also bring wet shoes.

Small springtime scene No. 4,237. Iris prime. A walk in the clouds. Watch your step. The bookshelf in my living room.

What bird? What wire? A glimpse of my future? It was more of a garage sale -- and not a very good one. One carries a politically conservative cable TV channel, and the other a liberal channel. Very rarely am I ever in a place that`s new, neat and clean.

CLEAN THE LITTER BOX ALREADY!!!! I take more pictures inside the refrigerator than you do. I like signs with arrows (see April 6 above). Today I taught a one-on-one photography training session, and used Heddy as my model and instructional device. Fragile proof of my fragile existence.

At age twelve, I left my single-story, one-hallway suburban elementary school and began attending classes in this huge building in the middle of the city. I was terrified. This breezeway to my art and drafting classes was always freezing year `round. And it leaked, so watch out for ice. Now vacant and decaying, the building faces demolition, although former students and preservationists have tried many legal maneuvers to keep it from being torn down. However, their strong sentiment won`t restore the decrepit building or revitalize its deteriorating neighborhood. Only a great deal of money will do that, and no one has offered. It`s time to let the old girl die.

I had two meetings downtown today. I walked to both. Pawn shop on Third Street. Scratching lottery tickets. It`s unlikely that the train overhead will come crashing down as I pass under the bridge -- but I walk fast anyway. Coffee: I never touch the stuff.

April 10, 2012
Evening in America (see February 18, 2005). I`m in my winter coat, and some team is playing outside. I receive a monthly paycheck from this organization, but have never been inside the building. Great, now my winter coat smells like cat. The color guard world championships are this week, and I`ll have to miss most of the competition because of work.

People who did not grow up around here can be easily identified by the way they [mis]pronounce Beavercreek. Guys play volleyball too? Who knew? She really knows the score. Poor Bucky the Battling Beaver has lost one of his paws. Talking strategy during a timeout.

A soulful Star Spangled Banner. Lighting a candle in front of a large crowd SOUNDS easy. I never qualified for this distinguished group in high school, but I did get into the National Honorable Mention Society. They were eating on an `air table.` Congratulations to the new NHS members. Lights out!

First this happened. Then this happened. And then this. After that, this happened. And, finally, this happened.

Northview High School (Brazil, Indiana). Score: 80.05, 14th place, Scholastic World Class. Seminole High School (Seminole, Florida). Score: 89.20, 5th place, Scholastic World Class. My final thoughts on the matter. A repairman has not been called. The artist has put the oranges to good use (see March 26, 2012). I suppose I know enough to use a film camera now, but I never could have LEARNED photography by using one. Post-It Peace.

You`ve been ticketed by the Nature Police. These blossoms should be crawling with bees. No bees. Sunny but chilly. I`m so glad to see you, Mrs. Rosenblum. Pillars of the community.

Seventy years ago this week, Lieutenant Colonel James `Jimmy` Doolittle led a surprise attack on Tokyo, Japan. Sixteen B-25 bombers launched from an aircraft carrier, even though they were too large to take off from a ship. Though the bombs did little damage, the raid boosted American morale and weakened Japanese confidence. All of the aircraft were lost and 11 crewmen were killed or captured. Five of the Doolittle Raiders are alive today. The raid inspired Hollywood films such as `Thirty Seconds over Tokyo,` `The Purple Heart` and `Destination Tokyo.`

I signalled for them to fly closer, but was ignored. Sunset at Smith Garden. Ripple effect. It died much too soon. Please, do not send flowers. Flexiflower.

April 19, 2012
Taken from across the street with my big ol` lens. Taken from two feet away with my big ol` lens. Photo number 3 for today. How to break a finger. The player on the right served for nine points in a row, so he deserved the obeisance of his teammates.

April 20, 2012
I usually have time to take pictures during my lunch break, but the position of the sun at that time of day is not ideal. What a plush building. Today`s photos are all about surface texture. Sorry, but my neighborhood is only 162 years old. We`re still putting some finishing touches on it. Surprisingly, nobody asked me what I was doing.

April 21, 2012
And you think YOUR job is bad. I`m testing the lights that I will use to take pictures tonight. The little blue dots in my eyes indicate the lights work. Prom Night 2012. You don`t need this when you`re dancing. And you certainly don`t need these to dance.

April 22, 2012
Uh, no thanks, I`m vegan. A picture of nothing. It`s what I do best. High above Monument Avenue. Small walkup apartment for rent downtown. No, you go first. I`ll follow.

April 23, 2012
This plant . . . it`s eating sunlight. Layer upon layer of complexity. Consider the implications. Things are looking up. Some people see the world in black and white. She`s a very cooperative model. She never complains.

April 24, 2012
Preservationists being protest. Alumni being sadness. No more cold, leaky breezeway (see April 8 above). Is it too late for me to clean out my locker? I guess the class reunion won`t be in the gym after all. The rest of the neighborhood awaits the wrecking ball.

April 25, 2012
Celebrating the Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist. Today 34 Catholic schools gathered for a massive Mass. Meanwhile, in a secular school, it was rehearsal night. High school musicals bring amazing things out of people. She plays volleyball too (see September 6, 2011).

April 26, 2012
There are not many of these in my neighborhood this year. Unfortunately, there are lots of these in the neighborhood. The rain washed away the colors. I wasn`t about to clean someone else`s fence, but it would`ve been a better picture if I had. My hallway window at night.

April 27, 2012
It`s the annual DVAC art auction. Who will buy my sweet red cardinal? (See January 13, 2012) Always start with dessert first. I like to hang around with artists. I like to hang around with singers.

April 28, 2012
Prom dress 1. Prom dress 2. Prom dress 3. Prom dress 4. Prom dress 5.

April 29, 2012
`How can I keep from singing?` `Who is doing all that singing?` My camera didn`t know what to focus on. It was a fowl day. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. PSALM 1:3

Take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the -- crowd? The nice mothers sitting around me cheered when this mother`s son missed the catch. A front-row seat is great, but watch out for foul balls. Rain? What rain? This dragon has an electrical outlet on his upper lip.
