Welcome. On the waterfront. Fossil evidence shows that humans and ducks existed simultaneously. Suddenly there are daffodils everywhere. Ah yes, I remember exercise.

Early to bloom, early to die. The swimming pool of my youth now has trees growing out of it. This company really keeps track of their money. They also have Manager of the Nickle and Manager of the Dime. It`s nice to see Annette back in show business, isn`t it? When I was a boy in Minnesota, we didn`t have weather radar to predict blizzards. We just had a sense of foreboding. GARRISON KEILLOR

What does everyone else know about the coat room that I don`t? Today I had a shopping list that said: mirror, necklaces. I see only two. Wilbur or Orville? This is unusual: MY picture will appear on someone else`s Web site.

Where I`ve been the past few days. The University of Dayton is sweet. Waiting for the first session of the morning to begin. Still waiting . . . Collar ID.

April 5, 2008
My tuxedo shirt never looked better (see June 4, 2004). Now you know why I needed to buy necklaces on April 4. Now you know why I needed to buy a mirror on April 4. Somewhere a thousand ships are being launched. It`s hard to tell the quadruplets apart.

The first day of spring came and went a few weeks ago, but it meant nothing since the weather was still wintery. On the other hand, today is an insignificant day on the calendar but it means a lot to my daily photo routine. Today was the first day this year that I was able to walk around my neighborhood in the morning before work. I`ve stood there with my camera too. Three more days until the color guard world championships!

Thou shalt not steal. Sports marketing people seem to think that baseball by itself isn`t enough to hold our attention, so between innings they give us dancing bananas and baby races. The umpire said he was safe. Buy a ticket! `For it`s ONE -- TWO -- THREE strikes you`re out at the old ball game!`

The future is in their hands -- and that concerns me. The grapes of lunch. My neighborhood. Flowers are fireworks in slow motion. A finch`s day: wake up, fly, eat, fly, eat, fly, eat, fly, sleep.

April 9, 2008
It`s the most wonderful time of the year . . . With bright flags in the air . . . And big smiles everywhere . . . And loud songs in my ear . . . It`s the most wonderful time of the year!

April 10, 2008
For those who are unfamiliar with color guard, it may be hard to understand the appeal. Color guard is much more than just people twirling flags and spinning rifles. At their most basic, these brief performances can simply be an entertaining romp in colorful costumes. But at its best, color guard is a powerful combination of art and athleticism, music and movement. And like the finest forms of art, spectators are motivated to contemplate ideas such as morality and mortality, love and longing, fate and faith.

How could anyone NOT come to this recital, once they saw the amazing photos on the sign? Oh sure, it`s easy to play piano with someone HELPING. Flowers for the recitalists. My wonderful, amazing, beautiful and awe-inspiring photos remain on display until April 27. Big goose on campus.

April 12, 2008
At nesting time, three`s a crowd. They`re fighting over the same prime location as the two birds on March 4, 2005. April showers. Nature`s jewels. There`s an instructional book available on almost every topic in photography. Bananas have appeal.

April 13, 2008
It`s that brief and beautiful time when the trees bloom. We took our lunch breaks at the same time. These are already past their prime. Where did spring go? Tintinnabulation. Dayton beach.

April 14, 2008
How meager is the fantasy of the fairy compared to the reality of the bee. PHOTOGRAPHING FAIRIES by Steve Szilagyi Photosynthesis up close. The windows of St. Mary`s (not as successful as The Bells of St. Mary`s). And the glory, the glory of the fire alarm. Libraries have come a long way.

April 15, 2008
I didn`t expect to photograph this event tonight . . . I was planning to attend a lecture on climate change . . . But this performance was free (other than the $46 I spent at a gas station on the way) . . . And while the lecture might have put me to sleep . . . There were much more interesting things going on here.

Like they`re really paying attention. Want to be a flamenco dancer, or just look like one? What a flamenco dancer really looks like. A flamenco singer, surrounded by palmeros. And a flamenco guitarist . . . born in Minnesota.

April 17, 2008
The heart of the bloom. I wanna hold your hand. Late afternoon lunch. No wonder I`ve been sneezing. Final exams are less than two weeks away.

April 18, 2008
Another weekend, another world championship. Unlike color guard teams (which perform to recordings), percussion groups create their own music. And while males are rare in color guard, drum lines are more evenly mixed. Teams from 26 states have converged here in Dayton this weekend. This is how they wear their hair in California. What can they win? A trophy, a medal, a certificate, and a lot of pride.

April 19, 2008
My first butterfly photo of the year, and the subject was very cooperative. A familiar fence, a familiar steeple, seen in an unfamiliar way. They`re weeds, I suppose, but I don`t hold that against them. The only good TV is a dead TV. Sometimes I just don`t know which way to turn.

April 20, 2008
Very tiny. Neighborhood tough. Don`t fall asleep on the grass in early spring, or you might wake up and find yourself perforated. Originally called asphodel, then affodil and finally daffodil. Threelips.

April 21, 2008
went tulip crazy today. High gas prices got you down?

April 22, 2008
Study break. Twolips. Look, no hands! Swing into spring. How some students spent the last day of classes.

April 23, 2008
Set a spell. Ring around the garden. A lot has changed since 1863: we pay them now. There`s the television. It`s all right there. Look, listen, kneel, pray! JEFFREY GOINES in `Twelve Monkeys` An historical re-enactment of August 17, 2006.

April 24, 2008
I love taking pictures of springtime blossoms. I`m not the only one. Minnie Van. In this middle school production, both Robin Hood and Maid Marian wore braces. Ooooh! Aaaah! [you know, like watching fireworks]

April 25, 2008
I hope she doesn`t have allergies. Come, sit, and just BE. I spent the day in a quiet garden, but the evening at a much more noisy location. Go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer go! A girl and her snake.

April 26, 2008
I usually look for studio lights reflected in a model`s eyes, but not eyes like this. The boa constrictor spent the rest of the photo session waiting impatiently inside a garbage can. Last time to wear the color guard uniform before storing it away. Thy eternal summer shall not fade . . . So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this and this gives life to thee. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Hopefully it`s not a spelling test.

April 27, 2008
Finals weak. Natural. Unnatural. The noonday sun? No, just a streetlamp on a 15-second exposure (see February 26, 2008). Surrounded by technology, she`s studying with handwritten index cards.

April 28, 2008
No food or drink in the library. We all eat from a six-foot submarine, a six-foot submarine, a six-foot submarine. One of my favorite trees on campus, destroyed by unknown forces. Why sit around inside watching a little screen? This brick will exist longer than this flower, but flowers will exist longer than bricks.

April 29, 2008
Gimme shelter. Worm mustache. It`s easier going to work than coming home. Someone decided he needed fingernail polish and eyeshadow (see July 20, 2006).
