Leaping to conclusions. Flying off the handle. Sitting pretty. Going for a spin. Putting her foot down.

April 2, 2007
It was a nice day to hold class outside . . . . . . unless it was group presentation time. Window to the world. TODAY I`m figuring out how I could have made YESTERDAY`S pictures better. You can`t imagine how long I`ve been planning this photo.

`Well shone, Moon.` (A Midsummer Night`s Dream Act V, Scene 1) WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE The early bee gets the pollen. Flower in need of a bee. Bee in need of a flower. Why?

April 4, 2007
After temperatures around 80 yesterday, it was in the low 30s today. The tulip was shivering. Paperless society. Very large tarp under the highway. The old camera. The new camera.

April 5, 2007
I`m dreaming of a white Easter. Three visual planes. Your injuries would be less severe if you fell off a ladder THIS way. Just plugging along. Pegasus is a winged horse whose father was Poseidon and whose mother was Medusa (it`s a long story).

April 6, 2007
Looks like a good day to get some gelato. Nobody`s choosing that flavor. Why not? Those look like photos that I would take. Now THIS looks like a photo I would take. Gelato freezer closeup.

I hope the person who fills this machine has clean hands. Where do bees spend their time on such cold days? The warm glow of hospitality. This game involved math, so I had to quit. Fraulein Maria came to visit.

April 8, 2007
Press pass, earplugs and three days of schedules: I`m ready for the color guard world championships. Down and possibly out. See what I can do with a crayon? [See February 9, 2006] A dark room (but not a darkroom). Please turn off your computer and walk calmly to the door.

April 9, 2007
Scenes from a laundry room. Outdated technology. Clothespins are cheaper than an electric dryer. Broom handle and lace curtain shadow. Proud to display my recently cleaned storage area.

April 10, 2007
Trash talk. Five pictures a day. Urban scene #483. Needs butter. No trace of peach or papaya in my Peach Papaya drink (but it does have glycerol ester of wood rosin).

April 11, 2007
I felt guilty eating it. Something`s wrong here: this is a PHOTOGRAPHY class. Life is full of shades of gray. Today I struggle to find five pictures. Tomorrow I will struggle to limit myself to five pictures. Outside the wind howled down Baker Street, while the rain beat fiercely against the windows. It was strange there, in the very depths of the town, with ten miles of man`s handiwork on every side of us, to feel the iron grip of Nature, and to be conscious that to the huge elemental forces all London was no more than the molehills that dot the fields. ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE

COLOR GUARD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!! It is the photographer`s role to show only the most compelling portions of reality. I later saw this performer eating her lunch. It was still moving. The strangest routine of the day was based on the Salem witch trials, complete with a burning at the stake. Yes it`s just one more kid waving one more flag, but this moment of fleeting beauty has been captured forever.

April 13, 2007
What I like about color guard: unrestrained joy. What I like about color guard: fluid grace. What I like about color guard: stunning teamwork. What I like about color guard: stunning individualism. What I like about color guard: the reminder that we inhabit a world of beauty.

April 14, 2007
Friendship, friendship! Just the perfect blendship. How the rest of the world looks at color guard. Really, it`s an international competition. I`m just lucky to live in the city where it is held. I recognize that smile (see April 1). Looks like my new camera remote control works okay.

April 15, 2007
She just LOVES the Library. For a unique perspective of your next recital, try going up on stage. Sophisticated lady. Flowers for the sophisticated lady. The color guard world championships are over, so now all I have to do is edit thousands of images down to fifty.

April 16, 2007
Squeak, squeak! Squeege, squeege! The pontoon boat in the hallway finally got on someone`s nerves (see December 5, 2006). Five o`clock shadow. Rehearsing for tomorrow night`s performance.

April 17, 2007
Tooting his own horn. Neighborhood watch. This guy`s doing it all wrong. It`s not about ENJOYING the piano, it`s about playing the RIGHT NOTES. Come to a concert an hour and half early and you too can get shots like this. It was a blue-ribbon performance.

April 18, 2007
Dr. Bernard Kouchner, founder of the Nobel Prize winning organization Doctors Without Borders. Basic origami. Advanced origami. While other artists shy away from controversy, these sock puppets speak out with boldness (and a slight odor). Backstage at the Puppet Liberation Theatre.

Dell computer monitors are remarkably consistent: they have a 100% failure rate. Very pretty: it would be a shame to throw them away . . . . . . so why not recycle them? The world is in your hands. Take care of it. The bigger one is actually the smaller one.

April 20, 2007
La jeune fille est très jolie, n`est-ce pas? Today began Spring, Part II. I`m not going to tell you again!! Good grief, Charlie Brown! We all scream for ice cream.

April 21, 2007
Storybook beginning. Before the show. Ready and willing. Somewhere in there is a poet. I don`t think I photograph enough dancers.

April 22, 2007
Above the fray. Whenever I see an awning, I can`t help awning myself. Sacred Heart, in the heart of the city. I`m too big for a tutu. I`d have to wear a three-three. I don`t think I photograph enough dancers.

April 23, 2007
Now`s the time to check the AC. I tiptoed through them later. Concealed by the dense brush, the aboriginal hunter awaits the wildebeest upon which his village depends. You can`t stop decay. This doesn`t contradict the final caption from April 13, but we also live in a world of broken people.

April 24, 2007
Stream of consciousness. Toad at owner`s expense. The first drops-on-leaf picture of the year. Expect more. I`d love to shoot a dove, but will take a finch in a pinch. My photos show up in the strangest places.

April 25, 2007
Okay, that`s progress! A more technologically-advanced way to cheat than May 4, 2006. Always remember to tip the valet. While shooting this, my camera and I acquired little water droplets too. The pontoon boat in the hallway controversy rages on (see April 16). The world`s second-worst Frisbee thrower. The world`s very worst is the person who threw it.

April 26, 2007
Fly me to the moon. After work I got ready to walk the neighborhood taking pictures, but I never made it out of the tiny backyard. Rain is okay as long as it occurs when I`m asleep or indoors. The thin red line. The Mouth of the Tulip, or Homage to Georgia O`Keefe.

April 27, 2007
An advanced system described in an old-fashioned way. Seeing double. Wall hangings. Silas sat in silence a few minutes, looking at the money. `It takes no hold of me now,` he said, ponderingly. GEORGE ELIOT Even if it had been more than a buck I wouldn`t have considered picking it up (see July 2, 2006). Earlier this evening I heard a radio station give away $1000 to a screaming contestant. I thought, `So what?` She peeped out at him with dirty face and hands again, and said, `Eppie in de coal-hole!` GEORGE ELIOT

Dandelion and infinity. There was a dead cat nearby. Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds. BHAGAVAD GITA Climb every mountain. What is the sound of one hand clapping?

April 29, 2007
What we now know as Scotland was once called Caledonia. Its original inhabitants were called the Picts. Even 2000 years ago, the Picts were a highly cultured people. They were loosely grouped into eleven tribes. When the Romans invaded Caledonia in the first century, they found the Picts remarkable for their red hair. Accustomed to overpowering weaker opponents, the Romans were baffled by the fierce resistance of the Picts. To this day, a person with red hair symbolizes self-determination and strength of character.

Ready for the ball. I had hoped to take these photos yesterday, but only one sister was available (see above). She`s hoping to go to the Waffle House after the ball (see April 2). At about this point, someone driving by whistled and shouted `Looking good!` I waved and said `Thank you.` So alike, so different.
