When people come from out of town, it`s always nice to take them to the Art Institute. And a trip to the baseball stadium is a good idea too. But not as nice as the Art Institute. And be sure to visit one of the city`s many gardens. Remember to show your visitor some of Dayton`s tenements.

It was one of those kind of days. Reluctantly leaving A Certain Cultural Venue because my camera was not welcome. In that case: outta here! No really, it`s supposed to be like that. What`s the plural of gazebo? Gazeba? Mom and dad robin were protesting loudly as I took this.

I`ve been waiting a LONG TIME to take this picture. Two novels by Sinclair Lewis. There`s a potential market for pictures like this. When Paul Laurence Dunbar moved to this street in 1902, he somehow got the feeling he was in the right place. Likewise, I felt quite at home here.

Duck-in-grass. Duck-on-stump. Wilbur Wright with his head in the clouds. Coats made of butterfly fur are quite expensive. My backyard is about 10 feet square, but full of pleasant sights and smells.

June 5, 2006
Facetnating. I was attracted to a small grove by this flower . . . . . . but was later drawn to this leaf with slivers of shadow. High-velocity nephew. The life of the party.

If only the sky had been blue. Branch office. My little chickadee. Remember November 22, 2005? Remember September 5, 2005?

June 7, 2006
At lunchtime, I went forth with my camera to find beauty -- and found only ugly teeth. Strangely shaped shadows hover over Nevada. Shades of Memorial Day. My favorite ice cream is Graeter`s Black Raspberry Chip. Yesterday`s chickadee takes a bath.

Today I discovered how to cut the cost of a fillup by 50%: I get gas when the tank is only half empty. I`m reading a photography book that suggests experimenting with juxtapositions. Leaf Erickson. Adrift. For weeks, a diligent student has worked here on a massive research paper. `I finish today,` he keeps saying.

June 9, 2006
Every 94 minutes it erupts. What R you doing? My photographs can be found on only the finest conference room tables. What is it? I`ve said it before, but there is beauty in the kitchen sink.

June 10, 2006
I went to an outdoor photography workshop this morning, although everyone else left because of the rain. A little rain never hurt anybody. Sure I despise them, but they make for good pictures. Taken while sitting at a stop light. It was one of those days. See, I told you.

June 11, 2006
If you REALLY want, you can go back to the very first day I had my camera to see how this classroom has changed. It`s not really a birthday, but we`re pretending that it is. My favorite fungus. The NCR livery lives no more. No one going in, no one coming out.

June 12, 2006
How did they plan D-Day without whiteboards? Dayton: closed for repairs. What does that say? ENRON? Xanthocyanopia: the state of yellowness. Walk this way.

June 13, 2006
Only my keen observation skills kept me from being mauled this morning. Down by the old mill stream. Bilbo saw all round him a sea of dark green, and there were everywhere hundreds of butterflies, but these were a dark, dark velvety black without any markings to be seen. Youth is fleeting. Moth at my window, window moth.

June 14, 2006
Ever get board at work? Compartmentalization. Whoo-hoo! Summer camp! A perfectly-manicured soccer field is not cheap to maintain. That`s some kid`s full scholarship down there. Oddly reminiscent of January 24, 2006.

June 15, 2006
Clifford the Big Red Ant. There has to be an explanation for this. Who are you calling rotunda? Sun shapes. Lawn Chaney.

June 16, 2006
I work here. I work here. I work here. I work here. I work here.

June 17, 2006
It was so very tiny, yet I`m certain I heard voices singing `Solla Sallew.` It was covered with a transparent layer of morning dew. I shot a lot more than bugs today -- really. See, I shot this flower. Oh wait, there`s a bug. Getting a snootful.

June 18, 2006
I took 156 pictures today -- all of the same subject. From the 156, it was hard to choose only five. Size 1, and 98 pounds, in case you`re wondering. While shooting outside, this aspiring model became a perspiring model. Future movie star?

June 19, 2006
Why are photographers so cool? They stay in the shade. I haven`t time to read it, there`s no room on my bookshelf, and I could`ve spent the $60 on something else, but the first paragraph of the first story made the book worthwhile. The Miraculous Apparition of the Paper Towel. What do you call a cat behind bars? Justice. WHOOOOOOSH!

June 20, 2006
Like June 17th, today was a good bug-shooting day. Why would any butterfly allow me to get this close? Cuz it`s too busy drankin`. I was pretty happy with this shot of a little blue dragonfly... But then I saw this big one, and nearly fell in the pond.

June 21, 2006
Gather ye photos while ye may, it`s gonna be a nasty day. Old before its time. One generation abandons the enterprises of another like stranded vessels. HENRY DAVID THOREAU Sunset in the Oregon District. Like the other 19th century churches in the Oregon District, this one is no longer open for business.

June 22, 2006
A fork in the road. Fan letters. Rent is cheaper in the green apartment. Beauty is fleeting. She`s back, by popular demand.

June 23, 2006
When picture-taking begins around 6:00pm, here`s the kind of stuff that results. Cheaper than paying for gas. My pictures can be found in only the finest corners. Where honey comes from. They didn`t taste very good.

June 24, 2006
The majority of people on earth have brown hair. Many of them also have white dresses. The year this brown-haired, white-dressed person on earth was born, Ronald Reagan began his second term. That would make her the same age as Keira Knightley, Sarah Hughes, Kaley Cuoco and ... lots of other people. For me, it`s just another day and another 147 pictures.

June 25, 2006
When picture-taking begins around 9:00pm, here`s the kind of stuff that results. After an abundance of photos yesterday, I came alarmingly close to not taking any at all today. Some days there`s no motivation or interest, so you`d better be satisfied with these. If you`re NOT satisfied, then -- well -- no treats for you. At the last minute, something interesting presented itself.

June 26, 2006
No, not another day of dogs! Okay, dogs and ducks. Surf`s up! How Hansel and Gretel`s parents would do it today. And as Lewis and Clark navigated the bend in the river, they were impressed by the settlements of the natives.

June 27, 2006
`Hey -- buzz off!` This sculpture brought to you by Target Stores. It`s tough being a single parent. That`s a girl under there. Her little brother can only hope to emulate her.

June 28, 2006
VERY difficult to dust. The lights are green, traffic`s flying by, they`re digging in the middle of the street, with eyes like frightened animals. Not quite as advertised. How inefficient: I had to press the button when there WASN`T any lightning and hope it would suddenly appear. The calm AFTER the storm: the sky was bright with clouds gilded by the setting sun.

June 29, 2006
Liz was surprised to see this birthday banner -- and even more surprised to discover it was HER sheet. Ski Dayton. Escape route. In case you missed it, today was a city day. Sure you`re being watched, but if you aren`t doing anything wrong there`s nothing to worry about.

June 30, 2006
Backyard Susan. Becoming more obsolete every day. Cleanliness is next to birdliness. A bird`s diet: bugs and berries. Searching for truth.
