I think Jane Austen would have . . . . . . made a good match for Wilbur Wright. Sunny today, hot tamale. Controversial artist Christo wraps downtown Dayton in plastic. I hate to see that evening sun go down.

August 2, 2005
Summer is time for picnics. Melonhead. Coffee is hot, liquified dirt. If you had attended the Woodland Photo Clinic, you`d know what crepuscular light is. In profile.

I can be found here weekdays at lunchtime. One of my lunch companions. Captured, but not preserved. There`s nothing worse than having to dance with your own sister . . . while in costume. `She left the suds in the bucket And the clothes hangin` out on the line . . . `

August 4, 2005
The sun had yet to reach this side of the shrub. A real fixxer-upper. Why I KEEP shooting pictures of bees on flowers. On their way to attack my car. Why can`t we just get along?

August 5, 2005
I went to the bank this evening. There was already a crowd there. Water from the rock. Don`t know what it is, but try a little Thousand Island on it. Homage to Brother John Lemker.

Seven and a half million gallons of water pour over the Niagara Falls every minute. Someday I`ll show a photo of all the bug bites I get waiting for shots like this [Red Admiral Butterfly]. Sometimes it`s skill, sometimes it`s persistence, but sometimes it`s pure luck [Summer Azure Butterfly]. This shot was definitely persistence, with a bit of luck and skill [Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly]. The three-foot-high barrier, along with the ambiguously threatening sign, keep tresspassers out of Fraze Pavilion.

I knew it would eventually happen. There`s now a little one (see May 30, etc.). A sign of things to come. I thought I was being smart, using the telephoto lens from a distance, until I noticed there was another one on my leg. Hold . . . perfectly . . . still. Can they even see it from the inside?

August 8, 2005
Good camouflage -- but not good enough. I know -- I could have a photo exhibit with pictures of just ORDINARY things! I told you on August 3 it was captured, but not preserved [and later in the day, this shrub was cut down]. Blowing in the wind outside Marycrest Hall. Among the Serenity Pines.

Sixty years ago today, this aircraft, a B-29 Superfortress, dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, Japan. Nicknamed `Fat Man,` the weapon exploded with a force equal to 20,000 tons of TNT. About 45,000 Japanese died immediately, and two square miles of the city were devastated. Five days later, on August 14, Japan announced its surrender, bringing the second world war to an end. An alternative means to ending the war - invasion of Japan - could have cost 250,000 to 1,000,000 lives.

I spy something yellow. Moses Maimonides (1135 - 1204), Jewish scholar and philosopher . . . and his lunch. A lot of people come to Ohio and just find themselves hooked. Where donut holes come from. `The Bench of St. Mary`s` starring Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman.

Dew—is the Freshet in the Grass—`Tis many a tiny Mill Turns unperceived beneath our feet. EMILY DICKINSON His bill an auger is, His head a cap and frill. He laboreth at every tree - A worm his utmost goal. EMILY DICKINSON The purple could not keep the east, The sunrise shook from fold. EMILY DICKINSON If we love flowers, Are we not born again every day? EMILY DICKINSON. How good to be safe in tombs, Where nature`s temper cannot reach, Nor vengeance ever comes! EMILY DICKINSON

Don`t they realize how silly they look? [Do not look at December 8 or October 21]. Absolutely caked white with pollen. Every heart beats true for the red, white and blue. There was a hummingbird nearby, but it was too fast for me. The ghost of the playground.

August 13, 2005
Part of the tomb of Thutmose III, ruler of Egypt in the 15th century BC. Yeah, let`s not drop it. Tom and Huck. Last of the great North American river lions. I`m on pins and needles. I`ve had the box for 48 hours and haven`t finished it yet.

August 14, 2005
Former Ohio State basketball star Clark Kellogg, and an unnamed pirate. Somebody really ought to do something about those bandits of the high seas. Unidentified floating object. Duct tape keeps them afloat. `Paddle that way, woman!`

August 15, 2005
Butterflies aren`t much when viewed in profile. I couldn`t find a witty pun for `tiles.` It`s easy to get shots like this, now that I wear my petunia camouflage jumpsuit. Furry little critter. My first hummingbird shot. Not great, but my early bee and butterfly pictures were equally bad and then got better.

One of the many forms of prayer: Buddhist monks from Tibet. Portraying a herdsman in a traditional Yak Dance. Headgear of the monks from Drepung Gomang Monastery. The monks are creating a mandala of colored sand. Progress after one day.

August 17, 2005
Today the Buddhist monks continued work on the mandala. It begins as grains of sand, with each color having a symbolic meaning. And through extraordinary skill and patience, the sand becomes a sculpture. This particular pattern symbolizes health and healing. Progress after two days.

In a stairwell. Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet: praise Him with the psaltery and harp. PSALM 150:3 Very talented, and very shy. The pointy-eared orc raises its sword toward the hobbits. Progress after three days.

August 19, 2005
`Be sure to get my good side.` I paid the price of mosquito bites for this picture. Orange fish are called gold, and orange hair is called red. Translucent butterfly. The finished mandala, minutes before it was swept up and dispersed into the river.

August 20, 2005
`Found her in a barn in Tennessee, I paid five bucks for my Bucket T.` `Mustang Sally, think you better slow your Mustang down. You been running all over the town now.` `Either comin` or goin` she`s her best side showin` She`s my Bel Air Chevrolet.` `I`m a Ford Truck man, that’s all I drive. I ain`t got no boundaries, I don`t compromise.` `For this daring young star Met his death while in his car No one knows the reason why.`

The stuff that holds the universe together. All animals are driven by natural instincts. Cats are instinctively apathetic. Nothing much . . . just perfection. Uncomfortable with the whole mixed bathing thing. Who wants ice cream?

August 22, 2005
If people would only stop to consider what this actually is, their lives would be profoundly changed. Autumn came early this year. Yesterday`s perfect bud is today`s decaying blossom. No wonder painters use flowers to symbolize life`s brevity. Be careful what you wish for . . . . . . You might just get it.

Look, how a bright star shooteth from the sky, So glides he in the night from Venus` eye. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE At first I did adore a twinkling star, But now I worship a celestial sun. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Now, by my mother`s son, and that`s myself, It shall be moon, or star, or what I list. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Bright star of Venus, fall`n down on the earth, How may I reverently worship thee enough? WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE My mother cried; but then there was a star danced, and under that was I born. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

`The practice rooms are too small,` explained this hallway-roaming guitarist. The important moments in life are not the advertised ones. The real milestones come to the door of memory unannounced. SUSAN B. ANTHONY Fire in the well; and a fountain in the sun. ZEN NON SEQUITOR On the ground . . . . . . In the air.

It ALWAYS says that. Quilted for comfort. T-38 Talon, advanced jet pilot trainer. Speed: 812 mph. Range: 1,000 miles. Crew: Two. Barf bags: One. Well, given those choices, I prefer green. I have everything I need to begin my first University class in 12 years.

August 26, 2005
I dissected a mouse today . . . . . . and didn`t like what I found inside. Probably the least interesting photo on this site, but it was taken deliberately. How did the early settlers get by without cardboard? `And to think I flew stealth in the Gulf . . . `

August 27, 2005
This was my second attempt to get this picture. The first time, she blinked. Stately solitude. Ask not for whom the alcove waits. It waiteth for you. Poor withered rose, so like my heart, That wilts at sorrow`s cruel dart. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR Scooby Don`t.

August 28, 2005
Those are some LONG legs. The cycle of water evaporation, condensation and precipitation, all in one shot. My Sprite! A 1940s-era SUV. Allow me to supply the missing letters: n Lebanese Fes

To increase scoring and raise interest in soccer, the NCAA has introduced the two-goal, one-goalie system. Works periodically . . . sounds like me. Who needs air conditioning? Too cool for a hardhat. It must hurt to have to stand like that all day.

August 30, 2005
Something very bad happened here. To prepare for my class, I watch movies. Every eight or ten years, I buy myself some new clothes. Too cool for an umbrella. The Chex in the mail.

August 31, 2005
Alas, I won`t be back to the DAI any time soon. I don`t like to have my block busted. I won a bunch of ribbons at the county fair contest, but the heat and humidity took a toll on my photos. This is my favorite part of `Ben-Hur.` The stakes are high in the Junior Sheep Showmanship competition. I also scored pretty high in the Jams and Jellies contest.
