December 1, 2017
City under glass. December has gotten off to a beautiful start. When the sun is this low at 1:25pm, something`s wrong. There was hardly anybody else around this afternoon. They missed a gorgeous day to be outside. Busy sky.

Daredevil. Vocalist. Model. Athlete. Scholar.

December 3, 2017
Shot through the fence before I even entered the park. I`m grateful for another sunny and warm December day. The artificial creek wasn`t running today, so there weren`t as many robins (see November 25, 2017). Fish stories. Autumn gives us a preview of our own ultimate destiny.

December 4, 2017
Waiting for the light to change. What I take pictures of in December. The river is more complex than I thought it was. The Pont des Arts of Dayton, Ohio. Special delivery.

December 5, 2017
W R E A T H. See the world through Adam Alonzo`s eyes. Rehearsing for the KCC holiday concert. Accompanists don`t get enough credit. Tiny altos with their eyes all aglow.

December 6, 2017
Kiss me, Miami, thou most constant one! I love thee more for that thou changest not. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR Cold weather is made more tolerable by bright sun. I told you not to put your tongue on that thing! Yes, it feels that way sometimes (see July 24, 2008). In case you need some rice.

December 7, 2017
Weather report: cold and dark. The blue lights looked better than I expected them to. Every inch of the tree was covered in lights. Good job! An abundance of caution. Some days dere`s beauty, some days dere ain`t.

December 8, 2017
A typical American gains 5 - 7 pounds over the holidays. I`m not a typical American for many reasons. In cold weather, I take lots of pictures in the kitchen. It was harder to make up captions than take the photos. Photography lesson: as the cookie gets smaller, the camera tries to brighten the larger dark background. Tomorrow I hope to do better, but it`s supposed to snow.

December 9, 2017
You can`t make an omelette without taking a few photos. Another day of photos taken in the kitchen. This is your brain on margarine. Lines of demarcation. Really, I know tomorrow`s pictures will be better.

December 10, 2017
Celebrate! It`s the Kettering Children`s Choir concert. May the joy of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, the worship of the wise men and the peace of the Christ child be yours this Christmas. Not quite as good as the epic shot taken on December 11, 2011, but still very nice. We wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy new year! Once the concert is over, then they do it all over again.

December 11, 2017
Digging up history in the Oregon District. All the vain things that charm me most. Window dressing. More fun with Christmas lights and long exposure. `Star Wars` came out in the middle of the disco era.

December 12, 2017
This came in the mail. Remember letters and cards? An irresistable force meets an illegally-parked object. I took a break to eat some cheese-covered cheese. Thanks to technology I can`t begin to understand, my candles turn on and off automatically at certain times. I haven`t yet mastered the bathroom mirror selfie.

December 13, 2017
My least interesting photos are those I take at work. But when all I do is work, there`s no time for pictures. There`s so much music here it`s hard to comprehend. CDs are just $2 each! While you`re here, let`s talk about membership . . .

December 14, 2017
Do I want candy bad enough to ask this lady for it? It`s a skunk with a snowball, of course. I`m dreaming of a red Christmas. I really didn`t want to be outside in the cold tonight, but you and I both were getting tired of photos taken inside. The finished window (see November 15, 2017).

December 15, 2017
The morning got off to a musical start. But then the office got rather crowded. So I retreated into the serenity of the cathedral. This structure was built to withstand an atomic blast, so it`s taking a long time to disassemble. Sometimes I go overboard with my decorations.

December 16, 2017
If you got hungry enough, you`d eat it too. Now would be a good time to refill your bird feeder. I`m sure they`ll put all the bricks back where they belong (see December 11 above). Proud mama. I was wearing mine too, but without the decorations.

December 17, 2017
Tis the season for gluttony. Two cough drops should get me through Messiah. Money has never made man happy, nor will it. There is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN While replacing water pipes, this fire hydrant was moved to a spot where no one will ever park in front of it again. It`s pointless to wash my dirty car until the water pipe replacement project is finally completed.

December 18, 2017
The sheets are an attempt to keep the workers warm. You get flowers in April and rocks in December. I nearly had a tragedy on the slippery rocks. This tie will never go out of style. It`s Christmastime in the city.

December 19, 2017
The Polar Express. Happy holidays. Six days `til Christmas. It probably won`t fall down this year (see December 20, 2015). Hold on a minute while I count the number of bulbs.

December 20, 2017
Today is the last day of fall. Can spring be far behind? Calvin was right. People are totally depraved. A stuffy afternoon in the office was transformed into a beautiful experience outdoors under the bright sun. Today`s crosswalk violator (see November 14, 2017). As our time winds down, we all seek comfort and simple pleasures of companionship, everyday routines, the taste of good food, the warmth of sunlight on our faces. We become less interested in the rewards of achieving and accumulating and more interested in the rewards of simply being. ATUL GAWANDE

Rally `round the flag, boys! Big sky country. Winter came in like a lamb. Let`s roll! My commute is much safer.

December 22, 2017
This is a typical nature photo in December. The heart of the evergreen (see December 7 above). I must admit I chased after this guy once I saw his hat. Little Jesu, little mother, good Saint Joseph come this night. Stability.

December 23, 2017
I went out and made an effort, like a real photographer. The holly bears a berry as red as any blood. Today is a heavy travel day. I happily stayed home. I wood. Wood you? The prairie -- normally so full of life -- was silent today.

December 24, 2017
For the second year in a row, I was kindly invited to be a guest at another family`s Christmas Eve gathering. This bring backs memories (see April 1, 2007). This is the brief time when I listen to Christmas music. I`m dreading of a white Christmas. Taking photos at night in the snow is as bad as it gets.

December 25, 2017
Merry Christmas. I hope it`s the right size. Adam Alonzo photos are found in only the finest homes. Winston wants chocolate. So do I.

December 26, 2017
He was made of snow, but the children know how he came to life one day. Big shoes to fill. I`ve been making a killing with Bitcoin. This secluded place in the basement MIGHT be more creepy if I found pictures of myself taped on the walls. I predict this will be the must-have toy next Christmas.

December 27, 2017
Saxophonists Hal Melia, Grant Koeller and Vince Gilotti performed one final time at Gilly`s in downtown Dayton. Vocalist Sandra Rutledge helped pay tribute to Jerry Gilotti, who died on Thanksgiving (see March 6, 2010). Drummer Fenton Sparks also played in the Jam for Jerry (see October 24, 2013). Randy Villars played piano during part of the jam (see December 9, 2015). Unfortunately, Dave Brubeck was unable to make it.

December 28, 2017
Beware of yellow snow. Cute is in the eye of the beholder. We both had the same idea: stay inside out of the cold. Inside the elevator, with a dirty lens. Nearly every social problem can be traced to one cause: there are just too many people.

December 29, 2017
Today I will try hard not to become frozen to the ground. River water freezes at one temperature; mysterious toxic sludge freezes at a different temperature. Ice skating looks like so much fun. `Let`s wait to migrate, you said. There will be less traffic, you said.` Beware of green snow.

December 30, 2017
Someone cleaned most of the snow off of my car. Maybe they stopped when they realized it wasn`t theirs. I don`t like cats or snow, but take pictures of both. Today`s theme: pictures of stuff with snow on it. There are 79 days until spring. The temperature won`t get above freezing for a week.

December 31, 2017
More snow: the cars throw up their hands in despair. Sunday in the park with Adam. The more cold and hungry they are, the more they flock. If one bird finds food, the rest want to help eat it. What do sparrows think when they looked up at geese?
