National Wakeboard Championship 2009. The fact that she wiped out on landing doesn`t detract from the quality of my photo. The air will do you good. The shot of the day. Forgot something.

August 2, 2009
Jenalyn is willing to take all the necessary steps to become a model. Park bench pose #27. She did this spontaneously while we were in a garden, then I made her do it again so I could take a photo of it. There are many things to see in this picture, but to me the most obvious thing is youth. Standing by a wall pose #6.

August 3, 2009
Fountain on Courthouse Square. The scene of all of today`s pictures. Who knew Dayton had a flag? Do we have a pledge? They`ve been like that since VJ Day. Remember Sam the Eagle from `The Muppet Show`?

August 4, 2009
It rained all day long, and in fact was still raining in the late afternoon when I finally ventured outside. Water diamond. Monarch of all he surveys. This hummingbird was about the size of my little finger. Just trying to dry off.

August 5, 2009
`Don`t hate me because I`m beautiful.` A lunchtime rally of arts organizations downtown. Shakespeare appears in many guises. A mid-summer day`s dream. The arts rally reaches a frenzied pitch.

August 6, 2009
Guitar. Bass. Drum. Keyboard. Vocal.

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. FRANCIS BACON Books are sepulchres of thought. HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW Knowing I lov`d my books, he furnish`d me From mine own library with volumes that I prize above my dukedom. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE In books lies the soul of the whole Past Time. THOMAS CARLYLE You must be a fast reader, because there`s oh so much to read. THE CAT IN THE HAT

I had about 48 hours notice to prepare for a photography workshop today on the topic of bugs and flowers. It was rainy in the morning, but fortunately the sun was shining by the time the students went outside to shoot. One of my recommendations was to take pictures from ground level, and this student practiced what I preached. I have no idea why anybody would ask ME to teach a workshop about photographing bugs and flowers. What Carmen wore to the bullfight.

It`s a furious battle for first place . . . . . . and meanwhile last place has already been decided. On a hot summer day, there`s nothing more refreshing than a quick dip. Are these seahorses seaworthy? Their boat won best use of theme: Wok on Water.

August 10, 2009
Wanna play? Wanna play? The Great Glass Elevator. Night of the round table. It was nighttime, so I had to resort to taking pictures inside a vacant Student Union where I didn`t really belong.

August 11, 2009
Boys of summer. Quiet and shy. Active and friendly. Stressed and slobbery. A presidential pose.

August 12, 2009
Don`t look up. You may not like what you see. Besides the Chapel dome, this statue is perhaps the University of Dayton`s most photographed icon. Peeking. Creeping. An infrequently used door.

August 13, 2009
He briefly sang a happy song, then started banging his head against the window again (see July 24, 2009). Hence the term `bug-eyed.` `Don`t forget sunblock.` Is it a good thing to have a flexible horn? A picture of apathy.

August 14, 2009
When they`re sitting on the floor, my pictures are nice and straight . . . . . . but when I hang them on the wall, they`re crooked. I straighten them out using high technology. I put together this contraption to hold the pictures in place against the wall while I climb a ladder to string them up. Another important tool I used in the gallery was this computer to play some calming Handel and Mozart.

This preseason scrimmage was just for kicks. Dayton leads the way. Goalkeepers seem to be missing the fear gland that the rest of us have in our brains. I just love a nice, new parking lot. Never point your camera at the sun.

August 16, 2009
Never point your camera at the sun. And when you do, close the aperture to create little geometric shapes. After seven hours of work on Friday, four on Saturday and three on Sunday, my exhibition is finally ready to show. Let the publicity begin! I just love my car on a nice, new parking lot. I just love a portal into another world on a nice, new parking lot.

August 17, 2009
Wilbur and Orville continue to soar above Dayton. Some people are content with ineffective measures. My clever sign to promote my photo exhibition might not last long in a busy elevator. Life and death on the streets of the Oregon District. Understand?

August 18, 2009
`Thanks for agreeing to meet me here, Dave. I wanted to talk to you . . . about your breath.` Toonces, the cat that went to college. Born a decade after John Lennon`s death, these band members are rehearsing a medley of Beatles songs. Though the band is already back on campus and practicing, most everyone else returns next week. Compact discs may be a dying format, but I`d like to see a musician autograph a digital download.

August 19, 2009
Not AT ALL what I intended to do, but I`ll keep it. Far be it from me to tell you how to vote . . . but Five Rivers MetroParks presents great photography workshops. Just avoid downtown for another couple of months. `They took off my legs and they threw them over there! And they took out my chest and threw it over there!` Tom and Huck go fishin` on my street after a powerful rainstorm.

August 20, 2009
Single Red Bird seeks mate. Loves seeds and insects. Beside the water, endlessly flowing. It took only three days for someone to steal my clever sign (see August 17). A hint of the changing season. `Silent Spring Rain` by Terry Welker [detail].

August 21, 2009
It`s all about ground clearance. Pencil sketch by Loretta Puncer. Uh, could I buy something? Ohio is big sky country. The B-side of a sunflower.

August 22, 2009
Artistic beauty with scientific clarity. Today I tried to compensate for the photos from earlier this week, which were a waste of your time and mine. Be careful where you sit. Ah, the things you can perceive at 1/8000th of a second. My camera flashes little red dots in the viewfinder when it focuses on something. I wondered why it kept focusing on the neck of this bird, then realized it wasn`t the camera, it was the brilliant rubies on its throat that were flashing.

August 23, 2009
Mary, the magical fairy. Mary makes a new friend at the Butterfly House. Merry Mary sits in the old pine tree, merry merry queen of the bush is she. Mary, full of grace. Don`t read, just look at the picture!

August 24, 2009
Remember our discussion on August 16 about aperture? At f/5.6, the sun is a dull blob. At f/36, it`s a starburst. Did you see that movie `The Bicycle Thief`? Someone has been distributing leaflets downtown. Homage to Russell Munson. Signage for the MetroParks levy has improved significantly since August 19.

August 25, 2009
Skywriting, Lesson One. Last night I dreamed I was petting a cat. Even while asleep, I wondered `What am I doing?!`. In the morning, I rose. Way to go. Now it`s going to come back every morning. The students have returned.

August 26, 2009
Slightly sinister picnic area. I have to wonder sometimes if I live in a slum. Red letter day. A totally spontaneous moment at the Library Information Desk (see April 7, 2009). Bending the rule.

August 27, 2009
It`s a musical instrument you can play. Or you can just let the wind play it. Thanks to years of photography, I`ve become something of an amateur botanist and can identify flowers from even the most subtle clues. Nature`s creatures know nothing of weekends or days off. They work every day, or they starve to death. Park bench.

August 28, 2009
Barriers. I`m glad I`m not the only one who notices heart-shaped wires. Stubborn nature. That`s good . . . I hate to have to pay for trash. Outta here.

August 29, 2009
Do you like my new web site? What it looks like UNDERNEATH a dew-laden web. You know, white goes with any color. I had another Saturday morning rendez-vous with the sun, the flowers, and the hummingbirds. Who knew hummingbirds had eyelashes?

August 30, 2009
One wonders, not just HOW, but WHY? Five shows today left me exhausted. Reggae Festival. Matt and Heidi look forward to their future together. Who knows what married life will be like?

August 31, 2009
I wonder why I spend most evenings inside at home instead of outside taking pictures. Fun in the sun. Just about everything looks better during sunset. Just flew in from the coast. Believe it or not, this was actually taken after the sunset shots.
